Communities

Gujarati Preston and Pakistani and Indian Blackburn

Lancashire's Asian wedding calendar is shaped by two towns in particular. At the 2021 census, 35.8 per cent of Blackburn with Darwen's residents were Asian, including 17.8 per cent Pakistani and 15.8 per cent Indian. That means Muslim weddings with a nikah and walima, and Gujarati and Punjabi celebrations, all within a few streets of each other.

Preston has a significant Muslim population, mostly of Gujarati Indian descent. At the 2001 census its Hindu and Sikh shares, 3% and 0.6%, were the highest of any local authority in North West England. Gujarati traditions therefore run through both Muslim and Hindu weddings in the city.

Burnley's community is smaller: at the 2011 census, 10.7% of its residents identified as South Asian or South Asian British. A Burnley wedding can draw family from Blackburn and beyond, which affects guest numbers and travel.

Gujarati weddings

Gujarati Muslim and Hindu ceremonies in Preston

A Gujarati Hindu wedding usually opens with the pithi or haldi at home, a garba or dandiya raas night, then the baraat, jaimala, kanyadaan and pheras under the mandap, closing with the vidaai. Kaushik photographs each in sequence and stays out of the priest's way during the rituals at the fire. The national Hindu weddings page explains the order of the day.

Gujarati Muslim weddings in Preston bring their own customs to the mehndi and the walima. We ask the family which moments matter most, which parts should stay private and how the nikah will be arranged, then plan positions so the ceremony is never interrupted.

For couples who want a civil ceremony too, the Lancashire Rose Suite on Bow Lane seats 74 and has a walled garden for photographs. Read our Preston Asian wedding guide.

Blackburn

Nikah, mehndi and walima in Blackburn with Darwen

Blackburn, about 172 miles from Northwood, is the administrative centre of Blackburn with Darwen. The register office is in the Town Hall on King William Street, with an outstation in Darwen, which suits a short legal ceremony before or after the religious one.

For the nikah, families choose between a mosque and home. We work quietly during the ceremony and during prayers, and follow any guidance the imam or family gives about where to stand. The walima can follow the same day or on a later date, and each is planned as its own event. See the national Muslim weddings guide and the Blackburn Muslim wedding page.

Portraits can be taken in Corporation Park, a registered Victorian park along Preston New Road, or at Witton Country Park a mile out on Preston Old Road.

Sikh weddings

Anand karaj in Lancashire

A Sikh wedding starts with the milni outside the gurdwara, then the anand karaj inside, where the couple walk four times around the Guru Granth Sahib during the laavan. Everyone removes their shoes and covers their head, including the photographer. Kaushik agrees a respectful position with the granthi or committee and keeps movement to a minimum during the laavan.

Tell us your gurdwara and any photography guidance its committee gives, and we plan the milni and the laavan around it. Our Sikh weddings page sets out how a typical day is covered from milni to doli.

Planning the days

Three-day weddings, 170 miles from Northwood

A Lancashire Asian wedding often runs over several days: a mehndi or garba on Friday, the ceremony on Saturday and the reception or walima on Sunday. Because the county is a long journey from our studio, an overnight stay between days is usually sensible at this distance and is set out in your written quote. Each day's coverage and travel appear as separate lines.

Large receptions in Lancashire's banqueting halls and country estates can reach several hundred guests. We ask for a numbered list of stage photographs and the running order for the entrance, speeches and cake, so the photographs move quickly.

When one family is getting ready in Preston and the other in Blackburn, a second photographer can cover the other family's preparations at the same time. Also see our Lancashire wedding photography overview.

Planning

Planning around Lancashire

01

Plan around the garba

A Gujarati garba or dandiya night moves fast under coloured light. Tell us the start time and when the couple join, so the key dances are covered.

02

Share guidance from the mosque

Ask the imam or committee about photography during the nikah and pass it on. We follow it and keep coverage discreet during prayers.

03

Consider a stay between days

For a three-day Lancashire wedding, an overnight stay between events is usually sensible at this distance and is set out in your written quote.

04

Give us every address

Home, mosque, temple, gurdwara, hall: each venue gets its own line in the plan so travel between Preston, Blackburn and Burnley is timed.
