Two rivers, two cities

The Tyne and the Wear: Newcastle and Sunderland compared

Tyne and Wear takes its name from its two rivers. Newcastle sits on the Tyne, its centre built around Grainger Town and the bridges to Gateshead. Sunderland stands at the mouth of the Wear on the North Sea coast, a city since 1992 with a seafront at Roker and Seaburn. Between them, a wedding day can move from Georgian streets to the beach in one afternoon.

Sunderland's story is shipbuilding: between 1846 and 1854 almost a third of the UK's ships were built on the Wear. Older still, part of St Peter's church at Monkwearmouth survives from the monastery Benedict Biscop founded in 674 AD. Newcastle's Grainger Town was built between 1824 and 1841 in the Tyneside Classical style, and Grey Street, with Grey's Monument at its north end, was called one of the finest streets in England by Pevsner.

Those two characters suit different weddings. A city-centre day in Newcastle is about stone streets and bridges; a Sunderland day can include the coast and the parks along the seafront.

Civic ceremonies

Newcastle Civic Centre and Sunderland City Hall

Newcastle Register Office is on the second floor of the Civic Centre (NE1 8QH). The Register Office room itself holds the couple and two witnesses, the Carliol Room up to 12, and the Leazes Room up to 50 with music, vows and readings. Beyond those, the Civic Centre holds approved premises licences for larger rooms including the Banqueting Suite, the Council Chamber, the Silver Gallery and the Grand Staircase.

The building itself is worth photographing. Designed by city architect George Kenyon and opened by King Olav V of Norway in 1968, it is Grade II* listed, with seahorse sculptures on its tower and David Wynne's River God Tyne on the wall. A few minutes outside after the signing gives you portraits with real character.

Sunderland City Council holds ceremonies at City Hall in the city centre in four rooms: the statutory Register Office, the Keel Room, the Riverside Room and the Mayor's Parlour, which has a roof-top terrace. The terrace is the room to ask about if you want open sky in your ceremony photographs.

The distance

Around 232 to 238 miles north: how we plan the trip

Tyne and Wear is a long way from Northwood, and we say so up front. Sunderland is about 232 miles from the studio and Newcastle about 238. We look at your start time and where the preparations happen, and at this distance a night in the area beforehand is usually the sensible plan.

The travel and any overnight stay are worked out for your venue and set out in the written quote as their own lines. If your wedding runs over two days, perhaps a civil ceremony on the Friday and a celebration on the Saturday, both days are planned separately and any extra night is shown in the same quote.

For guests coming from the south, Newcastle station is on the East Coast Main Line with trains to London King's Cross and on to Edinburgh, and the Metro's Central station is beneath it. Sunderland has Grand Central trains to King's Cross via York and the Metro Green line.

Portraits

Bridges, denes and seafront parks for couple portraits

In Newcastle, the Tyne Bridge, opened by King George V in 1928 and Grade II* listed, is the obvious landmark. Jesmond Dene is an ancient wooded valley on the Ouseburn that William Armstrong turned into a private garden with waterfalls and a grotto before giving it to the city in 1883. Leazes Park, beside St James' Park, has a Victorian lake and tree-lined paths.

In Sunderland, Roker Park opened in 1880 with a boating lake, a listed cast-iron bandstand and a ravine under a wooden footbridge down to Roker beach. Mowbray Park in the city centre has lakeside gardens and the Winter Gardens, a botanical collection inside a 30-metre rotunda that is useful on a cold or wet day. Penshaw Monument, a roofless Doric temple on its hill, is a dramatic setting for a pre-wedding shoot.

Venues and season

Seafront hotels, city ballrooms and the North Sea light

The approved venue lists here are varied. Sunderland's council list mixes seafront hotels with converted industrial buildings, a castle and large event spaces. Newcastle's directory runs from city-centre hotels to historic houses and big event halls. Tell us your venue and we will plan the day around its rooms and outdoor spaces.

On the coast, the North Sea brings wind and fast-changing skies, so seafront portraits are best kept flexible. A summer wedding gives long, light evenings in the north east; a winter one means taking portraits soon after the ceremony. Either way, we agree a covered spot for group photographs before the day.

Planning

Planning around Tyne and Wear

01

Pick the right civic room

Newcastle's Register Office room holds just the couple and two witnesses, while the Leazes Room takes up to 50. Match the room to your guest list.

02

Ask about the terrace

Sunderland's Mayor's Parlour has a roof-top terrace. It is worth asking about if you want open sky in the ceremony photographs.

03

Ask about a night away

At around 232 to 238 miles, an overnight stay is usually sensible and is set out in your written quote, alongside the travel from Northwood.

04

Keep the coast flexible

Seafront portraits at Roker or Seaburn depend on the wind. Have a fallback such as the Winter Gardens or the hotel.
