We hired Kaushik for our wedding. He was a fantastic photographer, very professional and great to work with. Kaushik was very flexible with timings, he was patient, and produced amazing photos! We received our photos really quickly and the quality of them are really nice!! His communication throughout was really good and understood what I wanted. My family were also very happy with Kaushik and the photos.

Excellent photography services before and during our wedding. Really enjoyed him being our photographer and he did a great job with the pictures. Working with him on the albums post wedding has been fantastic, he takes time to understand our ideas and portrays them in his work. Brilliant personality and very professional.

Register offices

The Devon Register Office in Exeter and Plymouth's two ceremony rooms

Devon's register office is at the Coaver Club in the County Hall grounds on Topsham Road, Exeter (EX2 4QX). Ceremonies are held in the Bellair building and on its patio, and the large ceremony room takes up to 60 guests including the two witnesses. A patio ceremony in good weather gives natural light for the vows, which suits photographs far better than a small windowless room.

Plymouth is a separate unitary authority with its own service. The Raleigh Room at Plymouth Register Office, 1 Derriford Business Park (PL6 5QZ), is a bright, modern room for up to 16 guests, ideal for a small civil wedding. For more people, the council's larger room is in the Council House on Armada Way (PL1 2AA), close to Plymouth Hoe, with space for up to 56, full-length windows and a grand entrance with a feature staircase.

That staircase and the Hoe nearby make the Council House a practical choice for photographs: a formal set inside, then a short walk to the sea for portraits.

Distance and stays

148 to 183 miles from Northwood: a Devon wedding as a destination booking

We will be straight with you about the distance. Exeter is about 148 miles from our studio, and Plymouth about 183, with rural venues sometimes further. A wedding in Devon is planned like a destination wedding, so we look at your start time, the drive and where the morning preparations happen before suggesting whether a night in the county makes sense.

The travel from Northwood and any overnight stay are worked out for your venue and set out in writing, each on its own line. If your wedding stretches over a weekend, with a welcome evening on the Friday and the ceremony on the Saturday, each day is planned and priced separately, and the extra nights sit in the same quote.

Guests from London have two rail routes into Exeter: Exeter St Davids, about 194 miles from London Paddington by Great Western Railway, and Exeter Central, on the West of England Main Line to London Waterloo. Plymouth station has Great Western trains to Paddington too, and the M5 ends just south of Exeter.

Venue types

Exclusive-use houses, manor hotels and waterfront rooms

Around Exeter, the venue picture is mostly exclusive-use country houses and manors with their own bedrooms for the wedding party, plus a golf club with a manor house of its own. Houses like these suit a destination wedding well, because the couple and the families can stay at one address for the whole weekend.

On the Plymouth side there are manor hotels on the edge of the city, and the council's approved ceremony list runs along the waterfront: historic rooms in the Barbican, hotels on the Hoe, a gallery in the city centre and a harbourside loft.

Send us your venue with its room plan and any rules on where a photographer may stand, and we will plan the ceremony and the portraits around them before the day.

Portraits

Cathedral, quay and Hoe: places for portraits in both cities

Exeter has history within walking distance of the centre. Exeter Cathedral was largely complete by about 1400 and has the longest uninterrupted medieval stone vaulted ceiling in the world. Northernhay Gardens, laid out in 1612 as a pleasure walk on the north side of Rougemont Castle, are the oldest public open space in England and include stretches of Roman and Saxon wall. Exeter Quay, beside the river and the 16th-century ship canal, gives a quieter waterside look.

Plymouth Hoe overlooks Plymouth Sound, with a wide promenade and Smeaton's Tower, the lighthouse rebuilt there from its original base 14 miles out to sea. Tinside Lido below the Hoe is a restored 1935 art deco lido. Royal William Yard in Stonehouse, built for the Royal Navy in the 1820s and 1830s, has listed stone buildings by the water.

Across the water in Cornwall, Mount Edgcumbe Country Park covers 865 acres and is reached from Plymouth by the Cremyll Ferry, which makes a memorable pre-wedding shoot a day or two before the wedding.

Season and coast

Light, weather and timing on the south-west coast

Devon summers give long evenings for portraits after the wedding breakfast, and a coastal venue catches warm light off the sea late in the day. Spring and autumn are quieter for travel and still give good light, while a winter wedding needs portraits planned close to the ceremony while daylight lasts.

Sea air means wind, and showers can blow through quickly. We agree a covered place for group photographs before the day and keep coastal portraits flexible, using a dry spell when it comes.

Planning

Planning around Devon

01

Use the patio

Devon Register Office ceremonies can be held on the Bellair building's patio. Outdoor vows give much better light for photographs.

02

Choose by guest numbers

Plymouth's Raleigh Room takes 16 and the Council House up to 56. Pick by your guest list, then plan portraits around the room.

03

Ask about a stay

For Exeter or Plymouth an overnight stay is usually sensible at this distance, and it is set out in your written quote with the travel.

04

Plan around the wind

Coastal portraits on the Hoe or by the sea depend on the weather. Agree an indoor spot for groups before the day.

Weddings in Devon: questions answered

Wedding photography starts from £750, with bespoke packages built around your hours and extras such as a second photographer or a hand-finished album. For Devon the travel from Northwood and any overnight stay are listed separately in your written quote, so the total is clear before you book.

You will find the county's register office in the grounds of County Hall on Topsham Road, at the Coaver Club. The Bellair building there has a large ceremony room for up to 60, witnesses included, and a patio where vows can also be said.

Plymouth is about 183 miles from our Northwood studio, so an overnight stay is usually sensible at this distance and is set out in your written quote. It depends on your start time: a late ceremony at the Council House is different from early preparations at a country house, and we look at that with you.
