You took the time to get to know us from the pre-shoot right up until the wedding day and made us feel comfortable and relaxed, and we had a lot of fun along the way especially with your silly little jokes to get us to laugh!

Register offices

Bedfordshire's three register offices and what each allows

Because Bedfordshire is split between three councils, the register office you deal with depends on where you marry. Luton Register Office serves the borough of Luton. Its Georgian Room holds ceremonies for up to 20 guests and photography is permitted there. The statutory ceremony, for the couple and two witnesses, takes place on Thursdays at 10am in a separate room where photography is not allowed. If you want photographs of the vows themselves in Luton, book the Georgian Room.

Central Bedfordshire Council holds its register office ceremonies at The Court House on Woburn Street in Ampthill, a former magistrates' court a short walk from the town centre. The Ampthill Room seats 58 guests on Fridays to Sundays, and the Woburn Room takes small Monday ceremonies of up to five. Behind the building, the Ampthill Gardens have a gazebo with seating for 10, used for outdoor ceremonies at weekends and for photographs after an indoor ceremony. The council also has local registrars in Dunstable, at the Grove View hub on Court Drive, and at Leighton Buzzard Library on Lake Street.

In the north, Bedford Borough Council's register office is in the Old Town Hall on St Paul's Square, near the Embankment. The building dates back to 1550 and was first built as a school. Its ceremonies take up to 80 people, a figure that counts the couple, the registrars and the photographer, and the upholstered Mayor's Seat is offered as a backdrop for photographs. From there it is a short walk to the riverside for portraits.

Venues

The kinds of wedding venue you find in Bedfordshire

The county's venues follow its landscape. In the chalk hills of the south there are golf clubs with long views from the Chiltern edge, and a converted mill beneath the hills where a ceremony can be held outdoors. Around Leighton Buzzard and Stanbridge the choice runs to golf clubs licensed for ceremonies, country pubs with garden space, and restored barns hired for a whole weekend.

The middle of the county is country-house territory. Near Flitwick and Silsoe there are listed manor hotels, community centres with their own wedding gardens, and historic houses with formal grounds. Barton-le-Clay has a converted tithe barn. Around Woburn you find hotels, a coffee house and village halls on the council's approved list.

Bedford and the east bring the River Great Ouse into play: a riverside hotel in Bedford, a converted tithe barn by the water, and listed country houses whose lawns take marquees. Near Biggleswade, a Georgian manor and a historic park with a Regency garden offer a different look again. Before choosing, check whether a venue holds a civil ceremony licence, since some historic houses in the county are licensed only for religious weddings in a chapel.

Light and seasons

Portrait settings and seasons around Bedfordshire

Bedfordshire's public spaces give a wedding party plenty of options for portraits between the ceremony and the meal. In Dunstable, Priory Gardens surrounds the Grade I listed 12th-century Priory Church of St Peter and includes a medieval physic garden. In Luton, Wardown Park has a boating lake and a suspension bridge added in 1908, and Stockwood Park has a historic walled garden. Ampthill has The Alameda, a listed avenue of lime trees, and Bedford has its riverside promenade through the Embankment Gardens.

Summer gives the longest light and the fullest gardens, and Grove House Gardens in Dunstable plants spring and summer flowerbeds. Autumn brings colour to the parkland trees of Ampthill Great Park and Woburn, and the Woburn Deer Park rut runs at that time of year. Winter weddings are shorter on daylight, so we plan the couple's portraits for early afternoon and use the venue's interiors after dark. On Dunstable Downs, the highest ground in the county, expect wind at any time of year and plan hair and veils accordingly.

If your date falls on the late May bank holiday weekend, remember that Luton International Carnival, described as the largest one-day carnival in Europe, is held around then. Check road plans with your venue so that cars and coaches are not caught out.

Guests and travel

Planning a Bedfordshire wedding day that moves between towns

A Bedfordshire wedding can easily involve more than one place: getting ready at home in one town, a ceremony at the register office in Ampthill or Bedford, and a reception somewhere else. The county's rail lines run north to south, so guests coming by train arrive at different stations depending on the venue. Thameslink stops at Luton, Luton Airport Parkway, Flitwick and Bedford; Leighton Buzzard is on the West Coast Main Line from Euston; and Biggleswade is on the East Coast Main Line.

Dunstable is one of the largest towns south of the Midlands without its own railway station. Leagrave, in north Luton, is about three miles away, and the guided busway links Houghton Regis, Dunstable, Luton and Luton Airport. Woburn is served by small stations on the Marston Vale line at Ridgmont and Woburn Sands, so most guests drive there via junction 13 of the M1. Build these facts into your guest information and your timeline will hold.

For photography, moving between towns means allowing time in the schedule. Kaushik will look at the distances between your getting-ready address, ceremony and reception and suggest where a second photographer helps, for example when the two families get ready in different parts of the county.

Distance and price

What the distance from Northwood means for Bedfordshire couples

The studio is in Northwood Hills, so Bedfordshire is a drive for us wherever you marry. Luton and Dunstable are about 20 miles away, Leighton Buzzard about 24, Woburn and Flitwick about 28, Ampthill about 30, Biggleswade about 34 and Bedford about 37. Travel to your Bedfordshire venue is set out in your written quote before you book.

Wedding photography starts from £750. A package can grow to include a second photographer, an engagement or pre-wedding shoot somewhere in the county, and a hand-finished album. Kaushik Bathia Photography was established in 2001; Kaushik holds five European Kodak Gold Awards and is rated 4.8 from 580+ Google reviews. For the multi-day Hindu, Sikh and Muslim celebrations common in Luton, see the Bedfordshire Asian wedding photography page, and for everything else in the county, the Bedfordshire photographer hub.

Planning

Planning around Bedfordshire

01

Pick the right Luton room

At Luton Register Office the Thursday 10am statutory ceremony room does not allow photography. Book the Georgian Room, for up to 20 guests, if you want the ceremony photographed.

02

Ampthill Gardens after the vows

Central Bedfordshire's Court House lets couples use the Ampthill Gardens, with their gazebo, for photographs after an indoor ceremony, which saves moving to another location for the first portraits.

03

Count the photographer in Bedford

At Bedford's Old Town Hall the 80-person limit includes the couple, the registrars and photographers, so leave room on the guest list for whoever is taking pictures.

04

Check the licence

Some Bedfordshire country houses host receptions but hold no civil ceremony licence. Confirm where the legal ceremony will happen before you plan the timeline around it.

05

Dunstable guests and trains

Dunstable has no railway station. Point guests to Leagrave in north Luton, about three miles away, or the guided busway, and allow for it in the start time.

06

Windy on the Downs

Dunstable Downs is the highest ground in Bedfordshire. Portraits there look open and wide, but plan for wind with veils, hair and dresses.
