Two councils

West or North: which half of Northamptonshire you marry in

Since April 2021 Northamptonshire has been run by two unitary councils. West Northamptonshire Council covers Northampton, the county town, and the western half of the county. North Northamptonshire Council replaced the old Corby, East Northamptonshire, Kettering and Wellingborough councils and has its offices at the Corby Cube. For a wedding, the split matters because it decides which registration service you deal with and where its ceremony rooms are.

If you marry around Northampton or Towcester, your register office is in the west. If your venue is near Kettering, Wellingborough, Rushden or Corby, it is the north. Venues licensed for ceremonies sit on each council's own approved list, so check the right one when you shortlist.

From our point of view the split barely changes the travelling. Northampton is about 49 miles from the Northwood studio, Wellingborough about 50, and Kettering about 57. That puts most of the county within a day's reach, and travel from Northwood is set out in your written quote whichever half you choose.

Register offices

Northampton's Guildhall and the North Northamptonshire ceremony rooms

In the west, Northampton Registration Office is at the Central Library on Abington Street, and ceremonies take place at the Guildhall on St Giles Street. The ceremony room seats up to 35 guests, with space for 11 more standing. The Guildhall itself is Grade II* listed, built mostly in the 1860s in Victorian Gothic style to designs by Edward William Godwin and extended in 1889 to 1892 and again in the 1990s. Its stonework makes a fine backdrop for the first photographs outside.

In the north, Wellingborough Registration Office is at the library on Pebble Lane, where two small rooms are licensed for four people each. That suits a quiet ceremony with two witnesses. For larger register office weddings, North Northamptonshire uses the Old Mayors Parlour at Kettering Registration Office, which takes up to 42 guests, or the ceremony room in The Corby Cube, which takes 100.

The Kettering ceremony room on Bowling Green Road has community gardens nearby for photographs. That is useful after a register office ceremony, because it gives you somewhere green for group shots without needing to drive.

Venue types

Country houses, golf clubs and lakeside suites

The approved venue lists in Northamptonshire show a county of country house hotels and historic estates. Around Kettering there are country house hotels and stately homes, and out in the countryside there are hotels set in large landscaped gardens. Near Wellingborough, the list also takes in a golf club and a lakeside function suite with a marquee.

Each type needs different planning. A country house usually means long corridors, period rooms and grounds that are a walk from the reception, so we build that walk into the schedule. A golf club wedding often has the course as a backdrop, though play may still be going on, so ask when the fairways are clear. A lakeside venue is all about light on water, which is at its best late in the afternoon.

West and North Northamptonshire each publish their approved list, so look up your venue on the right one and confirm the room and capacity with the venue before you set the date.

Parks and old stone for portraits in Northampton and Kettering

Northampton has more green space close to its centre than many visitors expect. Abington Park is the town's oldest and most popular park, with lakes, flower displays, a bandstand, a garden for the blind and a museum in a 500-year-old manor house. Becket's Park on Bedford Road is a riverside park on the banks of the River Nene, and the council records that Thomas Becket drank from a well on its edge in 1164, the year of his trial in Northampton.

To the south, the Delapre gardens cover about 8 acres off London Road, joined to about 500 acres of open parkland and Delapre Woods, where oak, sweet chestnut and beech survive from the original planting. Delapré was founded as a Cluniac nunnery in 1145, and the Eleanor Cross at the southern end of London Road is one of only three that survive. That makes it a rewarding place for portraits with history in the frame.

In Kettering, Wicksteed Park is a 281-acre Grade II listed park of parkland, meadows and lakes, founded by Charles Wicksteed in 1921, with free entry to the grounds. The town's parish church of SS Peter and Paul has a crocketed spire about 55 metres high that dominates the skyline and shows up in wide shots across the town.

On the day

Running a Northamptonshire wedding day from Northwood

Because most of the county is around 50 miles from the studio, a typical Northamptonshire wedding works without an overnight stay. Kaushik leaves Northwood early enough to arrive for the morning preparations, and he stays until the agreed finish. If you want coverage from very early morning, or the wedding runs over two days, we will say whether a local stay makes more sense and add it to the written quote.

Guests coming from London have good rail links. Northampton station is on the Northampton Loop of the West Coast Main Line, about 66 miles from London Euston, and it stands on the site of the town's castle. Wellingborough and Kettering are both on the Midland Main Line into St Pancras, so a north-county wedding can be reached by train from the capital too.

Summer brings long light for the country house lawns, and autumn suits the county's woodland and avenues. Winter weddings lean on period interiors, where candlelight and panelling take over from the gardens.
