Will a London wedding photographer travel to Scotland?

Yes. Kaushik Bathia photographs weddings in Scotland as a destination booking, from Edinburgh (about 321 miles from the Northwood studio) to Aberdeen (about 389 miles). An overnight stay is usually sensible at this distance and is set out in your written quote, with the travel itemised before you book. Wedding photography starts from £750, with bespoke packages for one day or several, and an optional second photographer or hand-finished album.

…Kaushik's work is fantastic and he took so much stress out of our special day. He and his team are highly professional, fun and friendly and work with you to capture the shots that you want. He captured some amazing moments of both us and our guests, some natural, some posed but all truly wonderful. We were blown away by our albums and videos and have no hesitation in recommending him to our family and friends.

Where you can marry

Civil ceremonies in Scotland can happen almost anywhere

Glasgow's registrars set out the Scottish position plainly: a civil ceremony can be held in a registration office or at any place the couple and the registration authority agree on, as long as it is not religious premises. That opens up hotels, a family home or somewhere that means something to the two of you. For a photographer it changes the planning, because the ceremony room might be a city-centre suite, a garden or a private house rather than a fixed register office.

Edinburgh's registrars take the same approach for the city, offering a civil ceremony at a venue of the couple's choice, from a restaurant or a garden to a tourist site, with separate guidance for outdoor ceremonies. In Dundee, the council says a civil partnership ceremony can be held anywhere within the city limits apart from a religious venue, outdoors included, and it charges separate fees when a civil wedding is held outside registration premises.

Tell us early where the vows will be said. An outdoor ceremony in Scotland needs a wet-weather alternative, and knowing both options lets Kaushik plan where to stand for the vows, the signing and the walk back down the aisle in either setting.

Notice and paperwork

Giving notice in Edinburgh, and why to start early from England

The City of Edinburgh Council says notice of marriage for a civil ceremony must be lodged at least 29 days before the ceremony, and it advises sending the forms six to eight weeks ahead. If you live in London or the Home Counties and are marrying in Scotland, that paperwork happens at a distance, so build it into your timeline well before the final month.

In Dundee, the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages is at 20 City Square (DD1 3BD), and in-person marriage appointments there are by appointment only. Aberdeen City Council has been run from Marischal College on Broad Street since 2011, and its registrars conduct civil ceremonies at many locations across the city.

Our part of the paperwork is simpler. Once your date and ceremony place are fixed, we send a written quote that lists the coverage, the travel from Northwood and any nights away, so the photography is settled while you deal with the registrar.

Four city ceremony rooms

Council ceremony rooms in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee and Aberdeen

Edinburgh's civil ceremonies at the City Chambers use two very different rooms. The ground-floor Alexander Suite takes up to 36 guests with the couple standing, while the seventh-floor Council Chamber, with its domed ceiling and views over the city, takes up to 110. The second is far easier to photograph from several angles, and its windows give a natural backdrop for the signing.

Glasgow's registrars use ceremony rooms at 23 Montrose Street, the Kelvin Room and the Clyde Room, and suites inside the City Chambers, the Banqueting Hall and the Satinwood Suite. The City Chambers look over George Square, which is lined with statues including Robert Burns and James Watt, so a few minutes outside after the ceremony gives you a civic setting with no extra travel.

Dundee holds civil weddings in the Hollins Room at 1 Shore Terrace, for the couple and two witnesses or for up to 58 guests. Aberdeen's Grant Room in Marischal College holds a maximum of 50, and the college's granite front, the second-largest granite building in the world, is right outside for the first portraits as a married couple.

Distance, honestly

Between 321 and 389 miles from Northwood: how a Scottish booking works

We will not pretend Scotland is local. Edinburgh is about 321 miles from our Northwood studio, Glasgow about 333, Dundee about 351 and Aberdeen about 389. A wedding at that distance is booked the way a destination wedding is, and an overnight stay is usually sensible at this distance; it is set out in your written quote once we know your start time and venue.

The travel and any accommodation are worked out for your venue and written into the quote as separate lines, so you see what the distance adds before you book. If your celebrations run over two or three days, each day is planned on its own, with its own start time, location and coverage.

Rail is part of the picture for guests too. Glasgow Central is the northern end of the West Coast Main Line from London Euston, Edinburgh Waverley sits between the Old Town and Princes Street, and both Dundee and Aberdeen have the Caledonian Sleeper running overnight to and from Euston.

Read the city pages next: Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee and Aberdeen each go further into that city's rooms and nearby portrait spots. Our main wedding photography page explains packages, albums and the second photographer option in full.

Portraits in the cities

Places for couple portraits in each Scottish city

Edinburgh gives you a lot within a short distance. Princes Street Gardens lie below the castle on the drained Nor Loch, split by The Mound. Calton Hill, at the east end of Princes Street, carries the National Monument and the Nelson Monument, and Dean Village sits on the Water of Leith with its old milling buildings. The Old Town and New Town together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In Glasgow, Kelvingrove Park in the West End was laid out in 1852 and holds the art gallery and museum, and the Kelvin walkway runs along the river to the Botanic Gardens and the Kibble Palace glasshouse. Pollok Country Park, the city's largest, is a quieter, greener option south of the river.

Dundee has Baxter Park, the only complete park in Scotland wholly designed by Sir Joseph Paxton, and Dundee Law for a view over the Tay. In Aberdeen, Duthie Park by the River Dee holds the David Welch Winter Gardens and a Japanese Garden, useful when the weather turns.

Light and season

Scottish weather, long summer evenings and short winter days

The further north you marry, the longer a midsummer evening stays light, which gives plenty of room for portraits after the meal. Winter is the opposite, and a December wedding in Aberdeen or Dundee has a short daylight window, so portraits are best done straight after the ceremony while there is still light outside.

Rain is the planning point everywhere in Scotland. We always agree an indoor plan for the group photographs and a covered spot for couple portraits, then use the outdoor locations when the sky allows. A glasshouse, a grand staircase or a covered quadrangle keeps the day moving when it pours.

Planning

Planning around Scotland

01

Lodge notice early

Edinburgh needs notice at least 29 days ahead and suggests six to eight weeks. Marrying from England, give yourself more time than that for the forms and any appointments.

02

Agree the ceremony place

Civil vows in Scotland can be at almost any agreed place except religious premises. Confirm it with the registrar before you finalise the photography timeline.

03

Talk about a night away

At 321 to 389 miles, an overnight stay is usually sensible and is set out in your written quote. The travel from Northwood sits on its own line beside it.

04

Keep a wet-weather plan

Choose a covered place for group photographs and portraits near your venue. A glasshouse, gallery or hotel staircase saves the schedule when Scottish rain arrives.

Good to know

Weddings in Scotland: questions answered

Wedding photography starts from £750, and packages are built around your hours, your days and any extras such as a second photographer or a hand-finished album. For Scotland the travel from Northwood and any overnight stay are added as separate lines in the written quote, so the full figure is clear before you book.

At 321 miles to Edinburgh and 389 to Aberdeen, an overnight stay is usually sensible at this distance and is set out in your written quote. How many nights depends on your start time and whether the celebration runs over more than one day, and we look at that with you when we quote.

The registrars' guidance says a civil ceremony can be held at any place agreed with the registration authority other than religious premises, and Edinburgh has separate guidance for outdoor venues. Check the details with your registrar, then send us both the outdoor plan and the indoor fallback.

The City of Edinburgh Council says notice must be lodged at least 29 days before the ceremony and advises submitting forms six to eight weeks ahead. Book your photographer around the same time, so the date is held while the paperwork goes through.

Yes. Each day is planned separately with its own start time and location, and any nights between them appear in the written quote as accommodation. Tell us the full programme when you enquire and we will price it day by day.

This page covers Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee and Aberdeen, and weddings elsewhere in Scotland can be quoted the same way. Our town pages for each of the four cities go into their register offices and portrait locations in more detail.

You are welcome to visit the Northwood studio at 21 Joel Street, two minutes from Northwood Hills station, if you are based in or near London. Otherwise we can talk by phone or WhatsApp on 07956 505383 and go through the plan in detail.
