Aberdeen City Council's registrars conduct civil ceremonies at many locations, including the Grant Room in Marischal College for up to 50 people, and we would photograph a day there as fully as a country house wedding. Fellowships of the BIPP and the MPA are judged by peers, and that assessment keeps the work honest from one wedding to the next. An engagement shoot in Hazlehead Park, heavily wooded and home to Scotland's oldest maze, can be added, along with a second photographer and fine art albums.
Granite behaves unlike brick in front of a camera, and Aberdeen is built from it. Union Street and Broad Street throw back a cool, silvery light that flatters formalwear but needs careful white balance, and the sheer face of Marischal College, the second-largest granite building in the world, gives a group of any size a backdrop that does not compete with the couple. The railway station on Guild Street is central too, so guests arriving by train can be gathered without a coach. Granite, gardens and wedding rooms in Aberdeen
A licence, not a light meter, settles the choice of room. Nothing further comes into it, and no amount of wishing turns that room into a better one. In Aberdeen that can mean booking a granite building for its exterior and then marrying in a carpeted space at the back with one window. Go and look at the space, roughly at the hour you will be inside it, and count the windows. If there is one, everything about where you stand follows from which wall holds it.
Outside is where the building earns its keep. Granite returns far less light than brick, so a wall on Union Street will not throw anything back into a face, and Marischal College is large enough that a group set against the whole of it arrives looking tiny. Come closer and use a corner instead.

Inside the licensed room everything is fixed: fixed words, fixed table, fixed chairs. Registrars differ over what a camera may do in there and the answer is theirs to give, so the question belongs in your first meeting with them, never in a doorway on the wedding morning. Should the signing turn out to be staged afterwards, treat it seriously.
Group photographs are an administrative job before they are a photographic one. The list fails when it names individuals instead of combinations, or names somebody who went home after the ceremony. Hand it to one loud person on each side and have them read it aloud a week out, not on the lawn. Between the fixed points nothing is scripted, which is precisely why those hours are worth paying somebody to stand about in.
