Our approach leans on being calm and unobtrusive, blending into the day so guests forget we are there and simply carry on enjoying themselves. Church, civil, country house, barn, marquee or hotel, and every faith, culture and fusion celebration, we are equally at home photographing them all in Edinburgh. We have been photographing weddings since 2001, and that long grounding means we read a day's rhythm quickly and are ready for its moments before they arrive. A second photographer, relaxed engagement shoots and hand finished fine art albums are all available, and we travel across Scotland and the wider UK so distance is never a problem.

The castle is both the gift and the problem. Standing above Princes Street Gardens, it appears in almost every wide frame, and a photographer has to decide early whether it is the subject or a distraction, because the gardens sit in its shadow and lose direct sun well before the rest of the city does. That shadow line dictates the portrait time more than anything on the schedule. Holyrood Park and Arthur's Seat offer height and open ground when a bolder picture is wanted. The Balmoral, Cheval The Edinburgh Grand, Virgin Hotels Edinburgh and the Hilton Edinburgh Carlton keep the day central and within reach of Edinburgh Waverley, the busiest transport hub in Scotland, so guests rarely need cars. Civil vows take very little time, sometimes startlingly little, which catches couples out when they buy coverage. Hours bracketed tightly around the ceremony buy the least interesting stretch of the day; what you want lies on both sides of it. And where two people dress in separate buildings during the same hour, that becomes a staffing decision rather than an aesthetic one, settled at booking, since one photographer cannot occupy two addresses.

Group photographs fail for a single reason: nobody knows who belongs in them. Write the list out, then hand the job to a relative who will happily bellow surnames over a crowd. Choose the spot in advance too, because a central hotel has no lawn attached, which leaves indoors or a public park, and neither should be picked in a hurry. Your registrar governs their own portion of the day, so put those questions to them, not to us.
