Kaushik Bathia is an award-winning photographer working from our Northwood studio, with more than twenty-five years of weddings behind him. We stay calm and unobtrusive through the day, and a short portrait walk in Princes Street Gardens or up Calton Hill takes the couple away briefly without holding up the guests. Civil ceremonies can be held at the City Chambers, where the Alexander Suite takes up to 36 guests and the seventh-floor Council Chamber up to 110, or at any venue you choose within the city, and we photograph church, civil, hotel and multicultural weddings alike. Since 2001 we have learned to read a day's rhythm early, which matters at a venue such as Edinburgh Castle, where ceremonies take place in the Queen Anne Building or, for up to 20 guests, St Margaret's Chapel, though not from June to September. We travel from Northwood; travel and any overnight stay are quoted in writing before you book.

The castle is both the gift and the problem. Standing above Princes Street Gardens, it appears in almost every wide frame, and a photographer has to decide early whether it is the subject or a distraction. Where the light falls in the gardens at your chosen hour should set the portrait time, more than anything on the schedule. Holyrood Park and Arthur's Seat offer height and open ground when a bolder picture is wanted. The Old Town and the New Town give two distinct characters within a short walk of each other.

Choosing an Edinburgh room with the light in mind

A licensed room gets picked for its licence, and almost never for its windows. Whatever light happens to be in there is what you inherit, and the decision governing your photographs was taken months back by somebody comparing dates. Two things are therefore worth asking before anything is signed: which compass direction the room faces, and whether its seating can be turned around. Put both questions to city-centre hotels such as The Balmoral as well.

Portraits want open ground, and there is plenty in Holyrood Park or on Arthur's Seat, along with real height. Both charge for it in wind. Anything loose, a veil, a hem, long hair, moves constantly up there, so we shoot with the wind behind the group and nominate one person to hold whatever needs holding. Bring pins. Nobody ever regrets the pins.

Civil, same-sex and religious weddings in the capital

Civil vows take very little time, sometimes startlingly little, which catches couples out when they buy coverage. Hours bracketed tightly around the ceremony buy the least interesting stretch of the day; what you want lies on both sides of it. And where two people dress in separate buildings during the same hour, that becomes a staffing decision rather than an aesthetic one, settled at booking, since one photographer cannot occupy two addresses.

Group photographs fail for a single reason: nobody knows who belongs in them. Write the list out, then hand the job to a relative who will happily bellow surnames over a crowd. Choose the spot in advance too, because a central hotel has no lawn attached, which leaves indoors or a public park, and neither should be picked in a hurry. Your registrar governs their own portion of the day, so put those questions to them, not to us.
