Sacred mornings, told in pictures
Escorting the bride into the darbar hall is a slow, charged walk, and we work ahead of it from the side aisle so the arrival is covered without a lens ever facing the Guru Granth Sahib. The milni outside the gurdwara is where the two families formally meet, and we photograph the garlands, the embraces and the gentle laughter as each pairing steps forward in turn. Bowing before the Guru Granth Sahib on arrival, the matha tek, is often a family's first act of the morning, and we photograph it from the side, never from in front of the Guru.
Kalire tied above the choora are photographed close before the shaking begins, so the detail of the gold work is kept alongside the moment they finally drop on a cousin's head. Akhand path bhog is a calm, prayerful morning that sits beneath all the celebration, and we photograph it quietly and without flash, so the album carries the devotion as well as the dancing. We photograph the mehndi night as the henna is drawn, holding the patterns spreading over your hands and the songs and teasing flowing around the artist as she works.

Arriving before the makeup artist gives us a calm half hour to photograph the room, the outfit hanging, the jewellery boxes open and the house before it fills with relatives. Alarm clocks go off absurdly early for an anand karaj, and we are usually there before the family is fully awake, which is exactly when the most unguarded pictures happen.
Many couples hold the reception at a second venue, and we plan the travel between the gurdwara and the hall so no part of the day is rushed. We photograph the sagan and the milni greetings one by one, because those handshakes and hugs are the two families becoming one.
