The milni, the kirtan and the four laavan
Outdoors is where the milni usually lands, so in Glasgow the first plan you make is a weather plan, and the lighting one comes second. Men embrace in pairs, a ring of relatives shuts around them almost instantly, and the usable frames come from a step or two further back than the eye wants to go. Drums move us rather than the pictures: with dhol we take the flanks, and without one the front stays open.

We stay seated to one side and use long glass, which lets the four laavan be covered without a single person standing up, and it keeps the aisle clear for the palla. One further limit governs the lot: the Guru Granth Sahib's height in the hall is the ceiling on ours.
