I hired Kaushik for our wedding and I’m extremely glad I did!! Kaushik took amazing pictures and the quality of the pictures were amazing. Kaushik was very patient and was very helpful since the start. My family including our guest were constantly asking me who the photographer was as he gave the best service.

Seven councils, seven register offices

Where West Midlands couples give notice and marry at a register office

The West Midlands is a metropolitan county made up of separate borough councils, and each one runs its own register office. That matters when you plan, because the room you book depends on the borough rather than on the county name. Birmingham's office is on Holliday Street, close to the Mailbox, with lifts to every floor. Solihull's is on Homer Road, a short walk from the town centre, with a Ceremony Suite for the couple and up to 58 guests and a front garden used for photographs.

Sandwell's ceremonies happen at Highfields House on West Bromwich High Street, where the Sandwell Suite takes 82 including the couple, the Garden Room 30 and the Highfields Room 15, and photographs are allowed in the ceremony room and the gardens afterwards. Walsall uses the Hatherton Suite at the Civic Centre for up to 40 people. Wolverhampton's City Suite at the Civic Centre on St Peter's Square holds 62, with two further rooms, the Oak Room and the Rococo Room, at the City Archives on Whitmore Hill.

Coventry holds register office ceremonies in the Gatehouse of Cheylesmore Manor on New Union Street, a building the council traces to 1237 and describes as the only unfortified royal palace outside London. Its Black Prince Room seats up to 50. Dudley's ceremonies are at Priory Hall, a Grade II listed building in Priory Park, with a second council venue at the Thomas Robinson Building in Stourbridge. Check the room size against your guest list before you settle on a date.

Distance from Northwood

Coventry to Wolverhampton: what 73 to 100 miles means for your wedding day

Coventry is the nearest part of the West Midlands to our studio, at about 73 miles, with Solihull about 81 and Birmingham about 88. The Black Country towns run further west: Smethwick about 91 miles, West Bromwich 92, Dudley 95, Walsall 95 and Wolverhampton close to 100. Those figures are from Northwood, and we use them when we price a day rather than guessing at journey times.

For an afternoon ceremony and an evening reception, a long day there and back can work. If preparations start at 8am, or the dancing runs past midnight, an overnight stay is usually sensible at this distance and is set out in your written quote. The drive from Northwood is costed in that same quote and set out in writing before you book.

Venue styles

Abbey hotels, football stadium suites and Black Country halls

The county's approved ceremony lists cover a wide spread of buildings. Around Coventry and Solihull you find abbey and manor house hotels set in parkland, golf clubs and a museum. The Black Country side adds stadium suites, a converted railway building, a gallery and a former stately home in landscaped parkland.

Each style asks for something different from the photography. A stadium suite with pitch views needs a plan for the window light and the evening lighting. A manor or abbey gives you grounds for portraits within a few steps of the room. A large banqueting suite in Birmingham or Smethwick puts the focus on the entrance, the stage and the dance floor, and we would agree those moments with you in advance.

If your venue is not on a council's approved list, the legal ceremony will need to happen at the register office or another licensed building, and the celebration follows elsewhere. That is a common arrangement, and it simply means two locations on the timeline, with the drive between them built into the schedule and a few minutes kept back so the couple arrive at the reception without rushing.

Portraits between ceremony and meal

Parks and landmarks for couple portraits across the conurbation

Many register offices and town venues here sit close to good open space. Dudley Council points couples to Priory Park and the ruins of the 12th-century St James's Priory beside Priory Hall. In Birmingham, Cannon Hill Park has an ornamental lake and a listed bandstand and bridge, and the Botanical Gardens in Edgbaston have Victorian glasshouses. Walsall Arboretum, opened in 1874 close to the town centre, has Hatherton Lake and its boathouse.

Further west, Wolverhampton's West Park is a listed Victorian park with a lake within a ten-minute walk of the city centre. On the Sandwell side, Lightwoods Park has Shakespeare Gardens and a listed bandstand, and Dartmouth Park next to West Bromwich town centre has ornamental lakes and a viewing tower. Coombe Abbey Park near Coventry books commercial photography through the park, so ask before you plan a shoot there.

One day, two boroughs

Planning a wedding that moves across the West Midlands

Because the boroughs run into one another, a day can easily cross council boundaries: preparation at home in Solihull, the ceremony at Birmingham's register office and a reception in the Black Country. That is straightforward to photograph if the timeline allows for city traffic and parking at each stop. We build the schedule with you, with a buffer before the ceremony and time set aside for portraits on the way to the meal.

If you would like a second photographer, one can stay with the guests while Kaushik travels with the couple. Engagement shoots can be booked in Northwood or near home, and a hand-finished album follows the wedding. You can read more about how we work, and see full wedding galleries, on our weddings page, or call or WhatsApp 07956 505383 to talk through a draft timeline for your own day.

Town guides

West Midlands wedding pages by town

Each town in the county has its own wedding page with local register office and venue detail. Start with Birmingham, Coventry or Solihull, then look at Wolverhampton, Walsall and Dudley for the western side. The table below lists every town page with its mileage, which is the figure we use when your travel is quoted.

Planning

Planning around West Midlands

01

Check the borough, not just the city

Birmingham, Solihull, Sandwell, Dudley, Walsall, Wolverhampton and Coventry each run their own register office, with different room sizes and booking rules.

02

Book the night if you start early

Wolverhampton is close to 100 miles from Northwood. With an early start or a late finish, an overnight stay is usually sensible at this distance and is set out in your written quote.

03

Use the gardens next door

Solihull and Birmingham register offices offer garden spots for photographs, and Dudley's Priory Hall sits in Priory Park beside the priory ruins.

04

Ask about park permissions

Some country parks, including Coombe Abbey Park near Coventry, book commercial photography through the park office, so check before planning portraits there.

Good to know

Weddings in West Midlands: questions answered

Coventry is about 73 miles from the Northwood studio, Solihull about 81, Birmingham about 88, and the Black Country towns between 91 and 100 miles. Weddings travel across the UK, and the travel cost for your day is quoted in writing before you book.

Not always. An afternoon ceremony with an evening reception can work as a long day from Northwood. When preparations begin early or the reception runs past midnight, an overnight stay is usually sensible at this distance and is set out in your written quote.

It depends on where the ceremony is held. Birmingham, Solihull, Sandwell, Dudley, Walsall, Wolverhampton and Coventry each run their own office, from Holliday Street in Birmingham to the Gatehouse of Cheylesmore Manor in Coventry. Your local council's registration service confirms how to give notice.

Councils set their own rules. Sandwell says photographs may be taken in the ceremony room and in the gardens afterwards, and Birmingham's standard package includes photographs at the signing and in its courtyard garden. We confirm the rules for your office when we plan the day.

Wedding photography starts from £750, with bespoke packages built around your hours and events. Optional extras include a second photographer, an engagement shoot and a hand-finished album. The drive from Northwood and any overnight stay sit on their own lines in a quote set out in writing before you book.

Yes. The Black Country has stadium suites licensed for ceremonies and receptions. A room overlooking a pitch needs a plan for the big windows, the evening room and where portraits happen, and we work through that with you and the venue coordinator before the day.

Summer gives the longest light for park portraits at places like Cannon Hill Park or West Park. Autumn and winter suit indoor venues and town halls, with portraits planned for the early afternoon. Any month works, and we plan timings around your sunset.
