He covers the milni, the laavan, the langar, the reception and the doli, following your gurdwara's photography guidance. Packages start from £750, and travel from Northwood is quoted in writing before you book.

Excellent photography services before and during our wedding. Really enjoyed him being our photographer and he did a great job with the pictures. Working with him on the albums post wedding has been fantastic, he takes time to understand our ideas and portrays them in his work. Brilliant personality and very professional.

Smethwick

Smethwick High Street and the gurdwara in a converted church

Smethwick's Sikh history goes back more than a century. Sikh families began settling there from 1917, many of the men First World War veterans, and after 1945 Sikhs from Punjab became the largest group arriving from the Commonwealth. In 1961 the community bought a disused Congregational church on Smethwick High Street and converted it into what is now the Guru Nanak Gurdwara Smethwick.

For a wedding, that history sits in the background of a busy, practical morning. Smethwick is about 91 miles from Northwood and about four miles west of Birmingham city centre, so the baraat may come from a family home elsewhere in Sandwell or across the city boundary. We ask for the time the gurdwara needs everyone seated, and plan the milni, the arrival and the family photographs outside around that.

Smethwick Galton Bridge station has platforms on two levels, serving the Wolverhampton line and the Worcester line, which helps relatives arriving by train from either direction.

Beyond Smethwick

Wolverhampton, Foleshill and Walsall: the region's other Sikh centres

Wolverhampton has the largest percentage of Sikhs of any city in England, about 12 per cent of its population, and much of that community traces its roots to families who settled from Punjab between 1935 and 1975. It is also the farthest point of the region from our studio, close to 100 miles. Coventry is the nearest, at about 73 miles, and its Foleshill area has gurdwaras including the Ramgarhia Sikh Temple.

In Walsall, 10.5 per cent of people in the built-up area were Sikh at the 2021 census. Each of these places sits in its own borough, with its own register office, so a family in Walsall marrying into a family in Coventry may be planning across 25 miles of the region. Each event's address and its travel from Northwood are set out in your written quote, whether the homes are in Walsall or Coventry.

Tell us the gurdwara for your anand karaj and the homes for each pre-wedding event. We will show you which days can be done from Northwood and which make an overnight stay the sensible choice, with the cost in your written quote.

Gurdwara guidance

Smethwick, Foleshill and Wolverhampton: following each committee's rules

Kaushik's head stays covered and his shoes stay off inside, as for any guest. The rest of the guidance comes from your committee. The Guru Nanak Gurdwara Smethwick occupies the former Congregational church on Smethwick High Street that the Sikh community bought in 1961, and Foleshill in northern Coventry has gurdwaras including the Ramgarhia Sikh Temple. Ask yours where a photographer may stand while the four laavan are read.

Some gurdwaras ask photographers to keep to the side of the hall; others allow a place nearer the front, or ask that the camera stays down during the ardas. Rules differ even between gurdwaras in the same town, so ask the committee when you book and pass on what they say. We follow it, and the photographs are planned around it rather than against it.

The start time matters as much as the position. Coventry is about 73 miles from Northwood and Wolverhampton close to 100, so an early anand karaj at the far end of the region makes an overnight stay usually sensible, set out in your written quote. Where the gurdwara welcomes it, the langar afterwards can give relaxed photographs of relatives eating together.

The days before

Maiyan, jaggo and the choora at family homes in the Black Country

The celebrations can start days before the gurdwara. The maiyan brings turmeric paste and plenty of laughter to a front room. The jaggo night follows, with decorated pots of lamps carried through the house and into the street, singing and dancing into the late evening. The choora and kalire can come on the wedding morning or the day before.

These events can be held at the two family homes, which in the West Midlands might be a few streets apart or in different boroughs. West Bromwich, Smethwick and Wolverhampton are joined by Line 1 of the West Midlands Metro, which helps relatives move between them, but we still need each address and start time to plan our own route.

If both homes hold their maiyan at the same hour, a second photographer can cover the other family's preparations at the same time. It is an optional extra, listed separately in your quote.

After the langar

Galton Bridge, Warley Woods and Lightwoods Park for portraits

The gap between the langar and the reception is the best time for couple portraits. Near Smethwick, Galton Bridge is a Grade I listed cast-iron bridge by Thomas Telford, opened in 1829 and standing 70 feet above the Birmingham Canal. Warley Woods is a 100-acre community park with meadow, woodland walks and free parking.

Lightwoods Park in Bearwood, restored with lottery funding, has Shakespeare Gardens, a listed bandstand and a listed house. West Smethwick Park, opened in 1895, has the listed memorial to James Chance. All of them sit within a short drive of Smethwick High Street, so a portrait session can fit before the evening without anyone rushing.

Legal and next steps

Registering the marriage and planning the reception

Whether the anand karaj is your legal marriage depends on whether your gurdwara is registered for marriages and has an authorised person, so ask the committee early. If not, a civil ceremony is needed as well. In Sandwell, ceremonies are held at Highfields House on West Bromwich High Street, where photographs may be taken in the ceremony room and the gardens afterwards.

Planning

Planning around West Midlands

01

Ask the committee, then tell us

Each gurdwara sets its own photography guidance for the darbar hall. Ask when you book the date and send it on, so the plan matches it from the start.

02

Smethwick's two-level station

Smethwick Galton Bridge serves both the Wolverhampton line and the Worcester line, useful for relatives travelling in for the morning ceremony.

03

Wolverhampton is the long trip

At close to 100 miles from Northwood, an early anand karaj in Wolverhampton usually makes an overnight stay sensible. It is set out in your written quote.

04

Use the Metro between towns

Line 1 of the West Midlands Metro links Wolverhampton, West Bromwich and Birmingham, handy when the jaggo and the gurdwara are in different boroughs.

05

Portraits at Galton Bridge

Telford's 1829 cast-iron bridge over the Birmingham Canal is a short drive from Smethwick High Street, a good stop between the langar and the reception.

Good to know

Sikh weddings in West Midlands: questions answered

Yes, with the gurdwara's permission. The gurdwara on Smethwick High Street began as a disused church the Sikh community bought in 1961. Smethwick is about 91 miles from Northwood. Tell us the committee's guidance on photography in the darbar hall and we follow it throughout.

Yes, with the temple's agreement. Foleshill in northern Coventry has gurdwaras including the Ramgarhia Sikh Temple, and Coventry is the nearest West Midlands city to our studio, at about 73 miles. A morning ceremony there may be possible without a night away, depending on the start time.

About 12 per cent of Wolverhampton's population is Sikh, the largest share of any city in England, and many families settled from Punjab between 1935 and 1975. It is close to 100 miles from Northwood, so travel and any overnight stay are quoted in writing before you book.

Only if the gurdwara is registered for marriages and has an authorised person present. Ask your gurdwara committee. If it is not, you will also need a civil ceremony, for example at Sandwell's register office at Highfields House in West Bromwich or Wolverhampton's Civic Centre.

Yes. The maiyan, jaggo, choora and mehndi can all be covered, each as its own line in the quote with its hours. Tell us which home each event is at, and we plan the route between Sandwell, Birmingham or Wolverhampton addresses.

Sikh wedding coverage starts from £750. Packages are built around your day, from the anand karaj alone to every event from maiyan to doli, with optional extras such as a second photographer and a hand-finished album. The drive from Northwood is shown in the same written quote.

Galton Bridge, Warley Woods, Lightwoods Park and West Smethwick Park are all close to Smethwick High Street. Galton Bridge gives an industrial canal backdrop, while Lightwoods Park has Shakespeare Gardens and a listed bandstand for something greener.
