Whether the reception is at Wolverhampton Racecourse, Park Hall Hotel or another licensed venue in the city, the dance floor is lit and planned in advance so the bhangra can be covered from the middle of the crowd. Wednesfield and the streets around the middle of Wolverhampton hold a large Sikh population, so a wedding here can be big and the hall may be full well before the couple sit. Turn up when they turn up and the room is already gone. Whatever went unsettled before the doors opened is going to stay that way all morning. We arrive with the earliest relatives, work out the two viable positions, and stay put.

The four laavan mean the same walk performed four times over, and repetition is the single real gift the morning gives anyone holding a camera: a mistake on the opening round is repairable by the third. Use it deliberately. Round two is where exposure gets fixed and round three is where composition does. Singing between rounds is where faces live, also the one stretch long enough to swap glass unnoticed.
Milni belongs to a doorway, outdoors, in whatever Wolverhampton weather has shown up, and it ends fast because standing about in that is nobody's plan. Langar asks for a lens level with people who are eating, never looming over them. Afterwards the day hollows out for hours before the reception, which is working time rather than dead time: backups run, batteries get swapped, and the evening room is studied while still quiet enough to plan inside.
