The ceremony, shabad by shabad
Four circuits, with a shabad of several minutes between each one. That rhythm dictates the coverage: movement, stillness, movement again. While the ragis sing there is room to cross the hall, settle somewhere fresh and be in position by the time you stand for the next round of the laavan. Nothing whatever is asked of you during the walking, and that is deliberate. Langar afterwards obeys its own logic, long rows and continuous serving, and it gets recorded rather than arranged.
Flash stays in the bag throughout, so the morning runs on quick primes opened right up, the shutter held fast enough to keep a harmonium player's hand sharp. Milni turns all of that on its head. It takes place outdoors by the doors, under a Sandwell sky that does as it pleases, hard contrast and two-second embraces, minutes before you step back into a dim hall and rebuild from nothing.
