What a Shuttleworth wedding costs, and the room capacities

Shuttleworth does not publish its prices on the website. The brochure and price list are offered through an enquiry form that asks for your guest numbers, date, preferred setting and whether you want a ceremony, a reception or both (brochure and price list request). What the site does say is that hire includes the dance floor, bar service and a dedicated Wedding Coordinator (weddings page).

Catering is a separate cost. Shuttleworth works with five contracted external caterers: The Brothers' Supper, Portfolio Events Catering, Creme Catering, Bedfordshire Event Catering and Pink Diamond Catering. The caterers' sheet says hire prices do not include catering, and suggests asking each caterer to quote for table linen, staffing, cutlery, crockery and glassware for both the drinks reception and the meal (preferred caterers PDF). If you are planning a parkland wedding, the marquee or tipi is also on you: the venue says these are not provided (parkland page).

Smaller costs appear in the FAQ. Suppliers can arrive from 8am, and early access can be arranged for £60 plus VAT (weddings FAQ).

Capacities differ between the venue and the council, so confirm the figure that applies to your layout:

  • Garden Suite: up to 200 for a ceremony or reception and 150 dining on the venue's page; 240 in the council directory.
  • Saloon: up to 120 (80 dining) on the venue's page; 125 in the council directory.
  • Morning Room: up to 70 (60 dining); 75 in the council directory.
  • Drawing Room: up to 60 (50 dining); 65 in the council directory.
  • Dining Room: reception only, up to 20.
  • Summer House: up to 100 on the venue's page; 34 in the council directory.
  • Billiard Room: 90 in the council directory, not named on the venue's wedding pages.

Ceremonies in the house, the Summer House or the Swiss Garden

Shuttleworth House has five rooms licensed for civil ceremonies, plus the Summer House next to the croquet lawn (discover Shuttleworth House). The venue singles out the Morning Room, with its central window over the parkland, as often chosen for ceremonies, and describes the Summer House, in a sunken garden overlooking the lily pond, as the setting for an outdoor ceremony (Shuttleworth House weddings). Central Bedfordshire Council's directory lists the Garden Suite, Saloon, Billiard Room, Morning Room, Drawing Room and Summer House, with three linked outside areas: the Lily Pond Lawn, the Front Steps and the Summer House Top Lawn (council directory).

In the Swiss Garden there are two ceremony spaces. The Swiss Cottage sits in the centre of the garden and takes up to 20 guests inside with 50 standing outside; the Grotto and Fernery takes 20 (Swiss Garden weddings). The council lists the Swiss Cottage at 24, the Grotto and Fernery at 25, and a third space, the Garden Room, at 25 (council directory). For a Swiss Garden ceremony, where the reception follows is not set out on the garden's page, so ask whether it pairs with the house or another setting.

Shuttleworth does not publish ceremony times, a finish time for the evening, music limits or how registrars are booked. The council directory gives the House's contact as 01767 627922. Shuttleworth also does not publish anything on Hindu, Sikh or Muslim ceremonies, a mandap, a baraat on the estate, or halal and vegetarian menus from its caterers. Ask the Wedding Coordinator about each in writing, and ask the caterers directly about cuisines.

Natural confetti outdoors, drones by application: Shuttleworth's rules

The weddings FAQ answers the drone question directly and sets out the confetti, favour and footwear rules that shape the day (weddings FAQ). Note that the general prohibited items list on the same page includes drones, so the documented application route for a wedding supplier is the one to follow.

Where a rule is shown as not published, ask the venue in writing before the day.

Getting ready: the Garden Suite rooms and The Flat

Shuttleworth does not name a bridal or getting ready room. What it does publish is the accommodation: 15 en suite rooms in the Garden Suite and The Flat, a furnished one-bedroom flat inside Shuttleworth House with views over the parkland (weddings page). Neither the Garden Suite rooms nor the house have air conditioning, which is worth knowing for a July or August morning of hair, make-up and steaming (stay with us). Accommodation enquiries go to reception@shuttleworth.org or 01767 627 966. Ask the Wedding Coordinator which of these rooms come with your booking and where each party can dress.

Planning photographs in the house, the Summer House and the Swiss Garden

  • The Saloon has chandeliers, wood panelling and large portraits; the venue says it also suits a bar or dance floor, so details and speeches shots may share the room with the evening (house page).
  • The Morning Room has a central window looking over the parkland, which gives soft side light for a ceremony and for portraits indoors.
  • The Drawing Room has large windows with parkland views, and the Dining Room has ornate mirrors and a fireplace.
  • The Garden Suite is modern, with direct access to outdoor space and its own bar, so it is the easy room for guests moving in and out during the drinks.
  • The Summer House sits in a sunken garden overlooking the lily pond; the council lists the Lily Pond Lawn, the Front Steps and the Summer House Top Lawn as linked outside areas, which are the natural places for groups (council directory).
  • In the Swiss Garden, the Swiss Cottage is the focal point that the views are designed around. The Moat Bridge leads to Middle Island with views of the Indian Kiosk, the Grotto and Fernery has a Pulhamite cave-like interior lined with ferns, and the garden has peacocks and Champion trees (discover the Swiss Garden). The Grotto's interior is enclosed, so plan for low light there.
  • The venue says the Swiss Garden "offers a range of spots" for wedding photographs (Swiss Garden weddings).
  • Shuttleworth House has six steps at the main entrance with no handrails because of the listed status, and wheelchair access through Reception with internal lifts; the Swiss Garden paths are described as accessible throughout (accessibility). Plan where older guests stand for group pictures.

Henry Clutton's house and Lord Ongley's garden

Joseph Shuttleworth bought the Old Warden Estate in 1872. The earlier red brick manor built by the Ongley family was demolished, and the Victorian architect Henry Clutton designed the present house, built by the local firm Cubitts. After Richard Shuttleworth died in 1940 following a night flying exercise, his mother Dorothy turned the estate into a charitable trust in 1944; the Shuttleworth Collection opened to the public in 1963. The house is part of the Grade II* registered Old Warden Park (discover Shuttleworth House).

The Swiss Garden was created at the start of the 19th century by Robert Henley, 3rd Lord Ongley, in the Regency "Swiss Picturesque" style. It was restored with Heritage Lottery Fund support in 2012 to 2014, and a Diana of Gabii statue was placed in 2024 to mark its 200th anniversary (discover the Swiss Garden). The venue's wedding page notes that Colonel Frank Shuttleworth and Dorothy are thought to have spent much of their courtship there (Swiss Garden weddings).

Biggleswade station, the A1 and three entrances

For weddings and events at Shuttleworth House, use either the Alder Drive entrance (satnav SG18 9DT) or the Old Warden entrance (SG18 9EB). The house's own postal address is Alder Drive, Biggleswade, SG18 9EA. Biggleswade station is about 3 miles away, about 10 minutes by taxi, and Bedford station is 9.5 miles, about 20 minutes by taxi (getting here). The weddings FAQ lists three local taxi firms: Village Taxi, Ace Cars and A1 Cars (weddings FAQ). Guests flying in to the estate's grass runway need prior permission through the Old Warden Aerodrome site. We travel to Shuttleworth from our Northwood studio, and any travel cost is set out in your written quote.

Parking and wedding cars at Shuttleworth House

There is space for five wedding cars at the front of Shuttleworth House (weddings FAQ). Guest parking for weddings is not described on the website: the accessibility page mentions eight disabled spaces by the Hill Lane entrance on daily admission days and gravel parking opposite Hangars 3 to 6, a fair walk from the main entrance, but that is for day visitors (accessibility). Ask the Wedding Coordinator where guests park, and whether cars can stay overnight.

Shuttleworth wedding photography, frequently asked questions

How much does a wedding at Shuttleworth cost?

Shuttleworth does not publish its wedding prices online. The brochure and price list are requested through an enquiry form on the weddings pages. The website says hire includes the dance floor, bar service and a dedicated Wedding Coordinator. Catering is separate and comes from one of five contracted caterers, who quote you directly, and for a parkland wedding the marquee or tipi is not provided. Early supplier access before 8am costs £60 plus VAT.

How many guests can Shuttleworth House hold?

The venue says Shuttleworth House accommodates 150 to 200 guests. Its largest room, the Garden Suite, takes up to 200 for a ceremony or reception and 150 for dining, though Central Bedfordshire Council's directory lists it at 240. The Saloon takes up to 120 (80 dining), the Morning Room 70 (60 dining) and the Drawing Room 60 (50 dining). Hangar 3 takes up to 130, and the parkland is quoted at up to 10,000 with your own marquee.

Can you get married in the Swiss Garden at Shuttleworth?

Yes. The Swiss Garden has two ceremony spaces: the Swiss Cottage in the centre of the garden, with up to 20 guests inside and 50 standing outside, and the Grotto and Fernery for up to 20. The council's directory gives slightly different figures (24 and 25) and also lists a Garden Room for 25. The nine-acre Regency garden dates from the early 19th century and was restored in 2012 to 2014.

Can we have confetti at Shuttleworth?

Natural confetti is permitted outdoors, and the venue says fresh or dried petals are best. Confetti cannons are not allowed inside. The FAQ also asks couples not to use bubbles, confetti poppers, candles, matches, loose crystals, plastic table decorations or helium balloons as favours. Fireworks, garden flares, Chinese lanterns and naked flames are on the prohibited list.

Can our photographer use a drone at Shuttleworth?

Yes, according to the weddings FAQ, as long as the photographer provides the relevant documentation and completes the site application form. Tell the venue when you book a supplier who plans to fly a drone. Shuttleworth has an active airfield, so leave time for the application. We do not offer drone photography as a service.

Is there accommodation at Shuttleworth for a wedding?

Yes. There are 15 en suite rooms in the Garden Suite and The Flat, a furnished one-bedroom flat inside Shuttleworth House with views over the parkland. Camping pitches are also available. None of the bedrooms have air conditioning. Accommodation enquiries go to reception@shuttleworth.org or 01767 627 966, and prices are not published.

Which station is nearest to Shuttleworth?

Biggleswade station is about 3 miles away, roughly 10 minutes by taxi or a 45 to 60 minute walk. Bedford station is 9.5 miles, about 20 minutes by taxi. Wedding guests should drive to the Alder Drive entrance (SG18 9DT) or the Old Warden entrance (SG18 9EB). The FAQ lists three local taxi firms.

Can we have an Asian wedding at Shuttleworth?

Shuttleworth does not publish anything specific on Hindu, Sikh or Muslim ceremonies, a mandap, a baraat or halal menus. The house takes 150 to 200 guests, and the parkland can hold a much larger marquee wedding with your own structure. Ask the Wedding Coordinator about ceremony requirements and the five caterers about cuisines before you book.
