Half of a Sikh day belongs to a building nobody will relight for you. Windows sit where the architect put them, the ceiling stays at its own height, and the fittings above were specified for reading, not for faces. This is not a grievance. It means the useful thinking is finished before we arrive: which flank of the hall carries light at that hour, and where a person may stand without occupying somebody's line of sight.

Later the difficulty inverts. Give us a hotel function room, or a marquee pitched on an estate, and blankness becomes the trouble: every choice belongs to us, and each is available to be botched. Ask early whether the reception space admits daylight at all. That single answer shapes the first two hours more than any other item you will be asked about. The ceremony, shabad by shabad

Four laavan, and between them the sangat sits still while the ragis carry on. Nothing dramatic happens on the outside of that hour, and that is the difficulty: everything worth keeping is small. An aunt's face during a shabad. A father's hands. The moment a palla is placed. A darbar hall rewards patience far more than it rewards equipment, so we take the sides of it and keep off the carpet at the front.

The milni outside is loud, quick and often the best daylight the day will offer, so it takes the wide lens and we otherwise leave it alone. Langar deserves better than the two frames it usually receives, because people eating together on the floor is a photograph about a community rather than about catering. Doli belongs to another register entirely, and we shoot it from a distance, since standing close to it would count as an intrusion.

In the town centre, Loughborough Town Hall is Grade II listed and holds a civil marriage licence for its Victoria Ballroom and original Council Chamber, while the Railton Room at Beaumanor Hall no longer takes new ceremony bookings. For a larger reception, Prestwold Hall near the town is a Grade I house in 2,500 acres hired exclusively, including for cultural weddings, and Quorn Country Hotel has rooms for up to 300, with Queen's Park and its Carillon in the town centre for portraits. We travel from Northwood; travel and any overnight stay are quoted in writing before you book.

Do you arrange permission with the gurdwara before the wedding?+

We do that ourselves, once you have made the introduction. What matters is agreeing where a camera is welcome and where it is not, decided by the building's own people rather than assumed by us.

Do you cover the maiyan and vatna ceremonies before the wedding?+

Yes, if you want them covered. They happen at home, they are warm and messy and often the funniest hours of the entire week, and they ask almost nothing of us except that we keep clear of everybody's path.

Do you photograph the langar after the ceremony?+

Yes. It is the part most often reduced to two frames, and that is a waste. A hall of people served and seated together says something about a family that no posed picture manages.

Do you and your team cover your heads inside the gurdwara?+

Of course, and footwear stays at the door alongside everybody else's. That is not a concession, it is the plain condition of being allowed into a room where people are worshipping.
