We photograph the kanyadaan and the hastamelap as one flowing sequence, holding the giving of the hand and the binding of the union so the story of the ritual stays whole. Circling the fire, the bride leads some rounds and the groom leads others, so we change our position between pheras rather than shooting every circuit from the identical spot. We stay with the priest through the ganesh puja and the grah shanti, photographing the mantras, the ghee, the flowers and the concentration on the faces of the family.
Jaggo night is loud, late and full of decorated pots and dancing in the street, and the mix of darkness and lamplight makes it one of the more interesting evenings to shoot. Family performances at a sangeet often go wrong in the funniest way, and we keep shooting through the mistakes, because a missed step and the laughter after it beat a flawless routine.
