The pithi ceremony is warm and a little chaotic, and we photograph the paste, the teasing and the closeness of your relatives as they take turns applying it to you. Family performances at a sangeet often go wrong in the funniest way, and we keep shooting through the mistakes, because a missed step and the laughter after it beat a flawless routine. The welcome and the grah shanti set the tone for the days ahead, and we photograph these smaller ceremonies with the same care we bring to the main event.

By late evening the dance floor is the entire wedding, and we stay in among it rather than photographing from the edge, which is the difference between recording a party and showing one. Cake cutting, toasts and the entrance often happen within twenty minutes of each other, and knowing that order in advance is what stops a photographer being in the wrong part of the hall.
