Laja homa, when the offerings of puffed rice go into the fire, is easy to miss because it is quiet, so we stay tight on the hands and the flame as the grains fall. The bride's arrival under a phoolon ki chadar, the canopy of flowers carried by her brothers, moves steadily down the aisle, and we walk backwards ahead of it to keep her face lit.
Haldi is best photographed from low down among the paste and the plates, close enough to see the turmeric on fingertips, which does mean the camera needs cleaning afterwards. Garba floors move as concentric circles turning in opposite directions, and knowing that lets us stand where the two rings pass one another, which is where the pictures have the most life. Haldi mornings are bright and joyful, and we photograph the turmeric being smeared, the laughter between cousins and the mess of it all as your family gathers to bless you.

Golden hour lands mid reception in summer and before the ceremony ends in winter, and we work out when it falls on your date so the couple portraits are not left to chance. Photographing the parents through the evening is as important as photographing the couple, since they are the ones who will look back on the celebration as something they gave you.
