Nuneaton railway station is a junction on the West Coast Main Line and is also served by the Birmingham to Peterborough line, so guests arrive from several directions, while the A444 runs through the town and carries local guests in from Bulkington, Chilvers Coton and Attleborough.

Registrars, rooms and Riversley Park

Strip an English wedding to its legal core and very little is left. A licensed room, a registrar, two witnesses, some words neither of you wrote, and a signature. Fifteen minutes, give or take. Everything photographic about that quarter of an hour is decided by the room it happens in rather than by us: how many windows it has, what direction they face at your hour, and what distance a camera can retreat to.

Registrars vary, and the variation is the awkward part. The permitted standing position during the words themselves is settled by whoever is on duty that morning, not by any policy you can read in advance. So we prepare two, one close in and one well back, then ask when we arrive instead of assuming. Get your venue to raise it with the registry office at booking and you will usually know beforehand.

Room choice is the decision with the longest tail. A small licensed room puts a wide lens close to your faces and gives the pictures a certain intimacy along with a certain distortion. A long one lets us work from behind with a long lens, flattering to people but fatal to any expression caught from the front. Neither is wrong. Choose knowing which you are buying.

Group photographs are arithmetic. Every grouping costs far more time than anyone allows for, most of it spent locating one uncle. A list of twenty groupings will eat your entire drinks reception and everybody will remember it as queuing. Write eight. Then give that list to a cousin from each family, whoever can spot a face across a crowded lawn. The business then collapses into something painless. Of everything on a wedding day this is the piece you can solve on paper weeks beforehand, and hardly anyone bothers.
