Croxley station sits on the Watford branch of the London Underground Metropolitan line, between Watford and Moor Park. Croxley station sits on the Watford branch of the Metropolitan line, between Watford and Moor Park, and Northwood is a stop on that same branch, so reaching the studio means one train and no change. The practical consequence is scheduling rather than comfort. A headshot that needs no car and no parking can be dropped into a gap in a working day, and that is worth doing deliberately, because a face photographed at eleven in the morning and the same face photographed at six in the evening are not the same face. The later one has been at a screen all day and it shows around the eyes. Who books here decides the convention the picture has to meet. People using that line are commuting into Watford or on into London, and their portrait has to sit beside colleagues photographed in a company studio somewhere else entirely. That rules out almost everything that makes an appealing outdoor picture of a person. No dappled light, no interesting background, no strong colour. What is wanted is dull in the best sense: even light across the face with a little more weight on one side, a background held apart from the head by tone rather than by blur, and an expression that is pleasant without being amused. We photograph it that way on purpose, and we write down the background, the camera height and the working distance, because the value of a business portrait is never in the single picture. It is in whether the set of them still matches two years later.
