A headshot has to survive comparison. It sits beside pictures of everyone else on a team page or in a directory, and the eye reads the differences between them before it reads any of the faces. That is why the technical decisions count for more here than in any other kind of portrait, and why most of them are decisions about consistency rather than about flattery. Maple Cross has no obvious room of its own for this work. It is a small village of post-war houses beside a motorway junction, and the rooms in those houses, like the rooms behind the addresses along Denham Way, are ordinary rooms with ordinary ceiling lights. A ceiling light is the worst single source for a face, because it arrives from directly overhead: it lights the tops of the cheeks and the end of the nose while leaving the sockets dark. The remedy is always the same. Switch it off, bring one light in at roughly the height of the sitter's own eyeline and slightly to one side, and let a white card fill the other side. The second decision is separation. A wall immediately behind the head takes the same light as the face and gives a flat, cut-out result, whereas a couple of metres of space lets the background settle a shade darker than skin, and that gap is what makes a headshot look made rather than snapped.
