Two facts about Maple Cross decide how a dog is photographed here, and neither of them is about the dog. The first is the road. The village sits beside junction 17 of the M25 on the A412 Denham Way, and a working motorway junction lays down a constant floor of engine noise that never stops and never quite becomes background for an animal new to it. A dog raised here has usually stopped hearing it. A nervous or elderly dog arriving from somewhere quieter has not, and for that animal the session belongs in its own garden with a wall between it and the traffic, not on open ground. The second is Maple Lodge Nature Reserve, which is a reserve first and a walk second. Ground managed for wildlife is no place to let a dog run loose, so anything photographed there works on the lead, and the lead is dealt with afterwards: a slim one in a plain colour that hangs clear of the coat can be taken out of the frame at the edit, while a wide patterned one crossing the chest cannot. Coat colour then sets the exposure. A very dark dog under bright sky loses everything the coat is made of and reduces to a shape, so the answer is to put the animal in front of brick, fence or grass, meter for the coat itself, and let the surroundings sit brighter than they look to the eye.
