Serving Hemel Hempstead
Dog sessions happen on ground the animal already uses, in Hemel Hempstead itself or out at Bovingdon, Boxmoor and Redbourn, while cats and rabbits are photographed indoors at home, where nothing is new enough to investigate. Older animals are done the same way, at their own address, since a car journey uses up the patience a session needs.
The concrete thing is distance. We stay well back and stay quiet for the first stretch, because a dog reads a person crouching in front of it as an invitation, and an invitation is not a photograph. The useful frames come once we have stopped being interesting.

What we offer
Dog sessions on the ground your dog already walks in Hemel Hempstead, lead off only where it is safe.
Cats, rabbits and nervous animals photographed at home, at their own speed, with no travelling on the day.
You in the frame as well as the dog, since those are the ones people keep.
Twenty-five years behind the lens
Bring whatever the dog actually responds to, the squeaky thing, the particular word, the lead it knows means something. We use it sparingly and late, since by the fourth time it has stopped working altogether and there is no getting the attention back.
Sessions run to about forty minutes with breaks built in, and an anxious or elderly animal gets less if it has had enough. Files come back edited for the coat as much as for the face, because fur is where the detail lives.

Good to know
Please do. Your pet's favourite toy or a pocket of treats helps it relax and gives us a way to catch its attention. We bring plenty of our own too, along with squeaky toys and, when needed, a range of very silly noises. Locally in Hemel Hempstead that takes in St Mary's Church, one of the finest Norman parish churches in the country.
Absolutely. Some of our favourite pictures show an owner and their pet together, and we would love that for you in Hemel Hempstead. Join the frame to capture your bond, or stay just outside it to keep your animal settled and facing the camera.
Yes, at the yard where the horse is kept, since horses are photographed where they live rather than brought anywhere. That has consequences. The session is built around turnout and feed times rather than around the light, and the yard's own ground, its surfaces, fencing and space, decides what is possible. A dark coat wants early morning or the last hour. Tell us the yard's routine and we work to it.
Both. Dogs are usually better outdoors, on ground in Hemel Hempstead they already know, where the routine is familiar and the energy has somewhere to go. The Northwood studio suits a small or elderly animal, anything that will not settle in the open, and any coat that wants controlled light to hold its detail. If you are unsure, describe how the animal behaves off the lead and we will advise.
Of course. Anxious cats just need patience, and we have plenty. We keep everything quiet and calm, let your cat wander and sniff at its own speed, and wait until curiosity replaces caution before we start. Gentleness reveals a shy animal's true nature. This applies across Hemel Hempstead and Boxmoor, Bovingdon and Redbourn.
Serving Hemel Hempstead
Our studio is in Northwood, so Hemel Hempstead (HP1) is part of our core Hertfordshire area. It sits close to Kings Langley and Abbots Langley, which we cover too. Sessions run at the studio or on location in Hemel Hempstead, and there is no travel charge for local bookings.
Hemel Hempstead is a busy Hertfordshire town that expanded as a post-war new town, sitting close to the Chiltern Hills and keeping a historic Old Town high street. Hemel Hempstead station at Boxmoor is on the West Coast Main Line to London Euston, and the M1 and M25 meet nearby. When a session suits an outdoor setting, Gadebridge Park is a favourite near Hemel Hempstead, close to St Mary's Church.

The thing that decides a dog session at Gadebridge Park is the river running through the open fields, and it decides it before a single frame is taken. A dog going into water is no problem in itself. A wet dog for the remaining fifty minutes is, because a soaked coat photographs flat and dark and breaks into spikes that no amount of care afterwards will unpick. So water frames, if they are wanted at all, are the last thing we do, and everything needing a dry animal happens first. Footing matters more than distance. Riverside ground holds water long after the paths have dried out, and a session that involves getting low to work at the animal's height is a different proposition on wet grass than on firm. In the week after heavy rain we would start higher up and go down to the fields only for the frames that want the open horizon behind them. Coat colour changes what sort of day to ask for. A black or very dark dog on bright open grass forces a choice: expose for the grass and the dog becomes a shape with no eyes in it, or expose for the dog and the field burns out white. The way round it is shade or heavy cloud, where the range narrows and the coat holds its texture, so a dull forecast is worth keeping rather than rescheduling. Nervous animals and old ones are better photographed at their own address, where nothing in the room is new and nothing has to be walked to.

How it works
We travel to Hemel Hempstead rather than asking you to travel to us. On-location coverage suits weddings, corporate events, team headshots and product shoots, and we bring whatever lighting the space needs. The Northwood studio is available too if you prefer it.
Every session is photographed by Kaushik Bathia himself, FBIPP and FMPA, holder of five European Gold awards, who opened the Northwood studio in 2001.
