Hertfordshire ceremony fees for 2026 to 2027, and the Cheslyn question

Hertfordshire publishes ceremony costs for 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027. In the register office column: Monday to Friday £476 (£612 for a 4.30pm ceremony), Saturday £612, Sunday or bank holiday £661. A "You and Two" ceremony at Watford on a Wednesday morning is £187. A £75 non-refundable booking fee forms part of the final fee. A statutory ceremony is £62 and a certificate £12.50.

The fee table does not name Cheslyn House, so ask the council whether a Cheslyn ceremony is charged at the register office rate or the approved venue rate.

Capacity: 20 guests in the Cheslyn House ceremony room; the couple and 2 witnesses for You and Two. The capacity of the Hempstead Road ceremony room is not published.

Notice, You and Two, and ceremonies at Cheslyn House

Where ceremonies happen now. The council says the Watford ceremony room is currently unavailable due to construction work and offers ceremonies at Cheslyn House instead. Published Cheslyn days: Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 8am to 5pm, from 1 April to 30 September 2026; every Friday, 8am to 5pm, from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027; and Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 1 April 2027 to 7 May 2027. No date after 7 May 2027 and no reopening date for Hempstead Road is published.

Notice. Hertfordshire's wording is that notice can be given up to 12 months and no less than 28 days before the wedding; GOV.UK states the legal minimum as 29 days. You must have lived in the district for at least 7 clear days, and under the Home Office referral scheme the waiting period can extend to 70 days. Notice costs £46.50 each, or £63 under that scheme.

You and Two. The couple and 2 witnesses, on Wednesday mornings at Hempstead Road.

Ask in writing: may a photographer work during the ceremony at Cheslyn House, is confetti allowed in the gardens (the Hertfordshire brochure covers register offices, and Cheslyn is a Watford Borough Council park), and do photographs in the public gardens need permission from Watford Borough Council?

Daylight in the Cheslyn gardens, month by month

The Cheslyn gardens are open 9am to 4pm from November to February, 9am to 6pm in March and October, and 9am to 8pm from April to September, so in winter a late-afternoon ceremony leaves little daylight for garden portraits.

Planning photographs in a 20-seat room and 3.5 acres

  • A 20-seat room is intimate: we work quietly from the side and keep the group list to the people who are there.
  • The gardens are public on ceremony days, so we pick quieter corners of the 3.5 acres for portraits and allow time for passers-by.
  • Woodland, a pond and an aviary are all in the gardens, which gives variety within a short walk.
  • Check the light table: from November to February the gardens close at 4pm.

The building

Cheslyn House was designed by the architect Henry Colbeck and sits in 3.5 acres of gardens and woodland. Watford Borough Council owns it. The gardens hold a Green Flag Award and include a pond, an aviary, woodland and a botanical collection.

Hempstead Road, Nascot Wood Road and getting there

Watford Register Office is at 31 Hempstead Road, WD17 3EY, with free visitor parking. Cheslyn House and Gardens is at Nascot Wood Road, WD17 4SL, about five miles from our Northwood studio. The council does not publish a nearest station for either, so check your own route.

Parking for Watford ceremonies

Cheslyn House has a car park, and Watford Borough Council says the gardens and car park stay open to the public on ceremony days, so spaces are shared with visitors. Hempstead Road has free visitor parking.
