Bangladeshi families often build the ceremony around a longer, more elaborate seating of the couple, and knowing that in advance changes where we stand before the first word is spoken. When the bride gives her consent, sometimes from a separate room with the wakeel carrying her word, we photograph both the sending and the receiving so the whole exchange is kept.
The mangni rings are exchanged with blessings and jokes in equal measure, and we photograph the whole moment without interrupting it. Sehra bandi puts the groom at the centre of his brothers and uncles for a few minutes, and that tying of the sehra is one of the most photographable moments of the morning. The mangni, the engagement, is where the two families formally come together, and we cover the rings, the sweets and the blessings that mark the promise.

From the dholki drums to the walima stage
Two hours before the ceremony is when the bridal outfit and jewellery are at their most perfect, and that is the moment for portraits rather than after a long, hot afternoon. There is a stillness to the moments just before leaving for the nikah, and we photograph the bride and groom composed, ready and quietly nervous.
Once the contract is signed the day changes gear completely, from stillness to noise, and our approach changes with it rather than staying at one pitch throughout. Sunset usually falls somewhere in the middle of the evening, and stepping outside for five minutes at that point produces portraits that nothing inside the hall can match.
