Available light is our starting point in any prayer hall. Fast primes and modern sensors mean the room keeps its own warmth rather than being flattened by a burst of flash. When the imam recites from the Quran we lower our cameras and let the recitation carry, lifting them again as the contract is signed, so prayer is never treated as a photo call. Direction, when it comes at all, comes away from the ceremony. A quiet word before the family lines up, a suggestion during portraits, and nothing whatsoever while the imam is speaking.

When there is time for couple portraits, Aldenham Country Park, with lakeside walks and open grassland is a favourite, and Battlers Green Farm, a historic farm and shopping village on the edge of Radlett makes a memorable setting.

Twenty five years of nikah ceremonies means we know each stage, so we are in place when the khutbah ends, the acceptance is given and the dua begins. Turkish and Arab ceremonies often run shorter and differently structured than a South Asian nikah, so we ask beforehand rather than arriving with assumptions about when the important seconds will fall. Arabic recitation opens many nikah ceremonies, and we photograph the listening rather than the reciting, because the faces of the parents during those verses carry more than any wide shot of the room.

Music, dancing and competing sides singing at each other run through the pre-wedding nights, and covering more than one of them means the album shows the celebration building rather than arriving fully formed. Keeping close to the drumming through the dholki, we photograph the hands on the dhol and the affection the family pours into the singing. Prayers and Qur'an recitation open several of the smaller gatherings in many families, and we photograph those quietly and briefly, then put the camera down until the moment has finished.
