We plan around the venue whatever it is, a mosque, a hotel or a marquee, and the settings of Barnet, Hatfield and Cuffley and the wider Hertfordshire are well known to us. The closing dua draws the whole gathering into a shared moment of prayer, and we photograph the bowed heads and the open hands with real reverence.

We capture the details too, the henna, the nikah-nama and the mehndi jewellery, that make your day yours. During prayers and the more solemn parts of the nikah we lower the camera and simply observe, picking it back up when the mood lifts again. We move softly around the imam through the nikah, capturing the real moments rather than staging them.

Potters Bar is a leafy commuter town on the boundary of London and Hertfordshire, largely surrounded by green belt countryside. Potters Bar station is on the Great Northern line to London King's Cross, and Junction 24 of the M25 is nearby. For portraits away from the celebration, Oakmere Park, with its lake and formal gardens works beautifully, and Oakmere House, a historic house in the centre of the town adds a real sense of place.

For families who include a ring, we watch for the exchange and capture it as part of the ceremony, alongside the vows and the signing of the contract. An imam leads the ceremony for some, a qazi for others, and we adapt to whichever your family keeps, following the order they set rather than one of our own. The most solemn moments of the nikah are captured from a respectful distance with a quiet long lens.

Where the men's and women's sides are held separately, we cover both with equal care, a female photographer with the ladies and a male photographer with the men. As the groom arrives with his baraat, the procession, the drumming and the crowd of relatives around him make for photographs full of movement, and we are in the thick of it. Often it is the events either side of the nikah, the mehndi and the dholki, where people relax and the real character of the families comes through for the camera.
