Every Ritual, Every Day, Photographed Across Mill End

Mill End is a Rickmansworth neighbourhood in the Colne valley. We are as at ease in a small community temple as in a five-hundred-cover banqueting suite, throughout Croxley Green, Maple Cross and the rest of Hertfordshire. Around the sacred fire, the seven steps of the saptapadi bind a Hindu couple together, and we photograph each vow from close enough to feel its weight.

A second photographer means we can be at the mandap and with the guests at once, so the reactions in the room are held alongside the ritual at the front. Light in a gurdwara is rarely generous, so we work with fast lenses and no flash, keeping the darbar hall exactly as it looks to everyone sitting in it. Long lenses do the delicate work, so the moment a thali is tied or a nikah-nama signed can be photographed from across the room without a soul noticing.

A suburb of Rickmansworth in the Colne valley, historically a hamlet with a paper mill, tannery and brewery. Sits on the A412 Uxbridge Road, with the nearest station at Rickmansworth on the Metropolitan line and Chiltern Railways. The garland exchange, when bride and groom raise the jaimala over one another, releases the first great cheer of the day, and we catch it as it breaks. A nikah turns on the giving of consent, the mehr and the signing of the contract, and we record each with the dignity the occasion carries. We are mindful of every family's customs at the ceremony, and photograph them exactly as they happen.

Sangeet performances are rehearsed for weeks and deserve covering properly, so we shoot each act in full rather than grabbing a single frame per dance. Grah shanti and the smaller home pujas happen days ahead with only immediate family present, and they often yield the tenderest frames of the entire celebration. Aarti at the door, when the groom is welcomed with a tray and a certain amount of teasing, is a small ritual that reliably produces laughter.
