At a Gujarati mandap we know the hastamelap and the four mangal pheras, and we photograph them in the order your priest keeps rather than a generic script.

We shoot the getting-ready hours as a story of anticipation, from the jewellery going on to the last look in the mirror before the ceremony. We work quietly through the sacred parts and lift the energy for the baraat, reading each moment as it comes rather than pulling you out of it for set-up shots.

Stevenage was the first town in Britain to be designated a New Town under the New Towns Act of 1946, and it retains an Old Town high street. Stevenage station is on the East Coast Main Line to London King's Cross, and the A1(M) runs past the town. We often take couples to Fairlands Valley Park, a large park with sailing lakes for a few quiet portraits, and Knebworth House, the Tudor and Gothic mansion just south of the town is a lovely backdrop nearby.

We are mindful of every family's customs at the ceremony, and photograph them exactly as they happen. Around the sacred fire, the seven steps of the saptapadi bind a Hindu couple together, and we photograph each vow from close enough to feel its weight. The garland exchange, when the couple meet with the jaimala, is a moment of pure joy we love to photograph.

From the first event to the last, we tell the full story of the celebration. From the turmeric of the haldi to the music of the sangeet, the events set the tone for the wedding. The haldi or pithi is turmeric, colour and mischief in equal measure, and it often gives us the warmest and most unguarded frames of the whole wedding.
