The quiet rituals as well as the grand ones

During the pheras we walk the pace of the priest, and each round around the agni is photographed cleanly, from the trailing of the knot to the reaction of your parents. Chero pakaryo, when the groom takes hold of the bride's sari, marks a turn in the ceremony, so we watch the hands and the reaction of the elders sitting nearest the mandap. Saptapadi is spoken as seven separate vows, so we photograph it as seven separate frames, giving each step its own picture instead of compressing the whole ritual into a single image.

Welcome dinners are relaxed and badly lit in equal measure, and we work them gently so the arrivals, the introductions and the older relatives are recorded without a camera dominating the room. The mehndi evening moves at its own gentle pace, and we photograph the henna, the music and the anticipation building as the family counts down to the ceremony. We photograph the mehndi as the henna is drawn, holding the intricate patterns on your hands and the calm, happy conversation flowing around the artist as she works.
