We stay with the priest through the ganesh puja and the grah shanti, photographing the mantras, the ghee, the flowers and the concentration on the faces of the family.
Kalire tied to the bangles get shaken over the heads of unmarried friends later, which makes a lovely, chaotic little sequence to photograph in among the calmer parts of the morning. Mehndi evenings usually end with music and impromptu dancing once the henna dries, and staying past the henna itself is how the best pictures of that night get made. Pithi at home is often held in a courtyard or a garden with harsh overhead light, so we look for shade or a doorway and place you in it before the smearing begins.
