An anand karaj arranges itself downward from there: where you kneel, which flank of the sangat you enter by, how much focal length keeps a face readable from the rear wall. Once the palla is passed the couple make four slow circuits, and each circuit wants a fresh vantage. Crossing the floor mid-passage is rarely possible, so all four positions are settled during the ardas.
Earlier, outdoors, in whatever weather Hertfordshire offers, the milni delivers a sequence of short embraces between relatives who may never have met. Karah parshad afterwards reaches every hand present, which makes it a low, close, undirected picture and never a wide establishing shot. Langar is the stretch where nobody performs, and it photographs better for that. Hardest of all to shoot honestly is the doli, because the instinct is to soften it, and a family thanks you afterwards for having resisted.
