Laja homa, when the offerings of puffed rice go into the fire, is easy to miss because it is quiet, so we stay tight on the hands and the flame as the grains fall. During the ganesh puja that opens the ceremony, we stay quiet and low, photographing the priest, the offerings and the small gestures of the family as the day is blessed. The antarpat between you falls at a moment you will never see for yourselves, so we photograph from the side as the curtain drops and you look at one another for the first time.
We photograph the sangeet as a full evening, the arrivals, the dinner, the performances and the open floor, so the whole arc of the night is there to look back on. Mameru, when the bride's maternal uncle arrives with gifts and sarees, is one of the warmest of the Gujarati pre-wedding events, and we cover the presenting as well as the reactions. Sehra bandi, when the groom's turban and the veil of flowers are tied by his family, is short and quietly proud, and we photograph it before the baraat noise begins outside.

The gap between the ceremony finishing and the reception beginning is the only slack in a Hindu wedding day, and we plan the portraits, the details and the family groups into it deliberately. Evening receptions are usually lit by the venue in strong colour, and we bring our own light for the entrance and the first dance so faces stay warm rather than turning magenta.
