Pendley Manor is a country house hotel on Cow Lane, Tring, in 35 acres of landscaped and wooded parkland (contact page). The present house was planned in 1872 as a neo-Jacobean manor, the Harcourt Ballroom was added in 1991, and the newest space, the Rose Garden Grand Suite, takes 150 to 600 guests. The venue has dedicated pages for Asian weddings and describes its hand-carved staircase as a licensed setting for the signature photograph.

Our studio is at 21 Joel St, Northwood Hills HA6 1NU, photographing weddings since 2001 and rated 4.8 out of 5 from 580+ Google reviews. We are glad to photograph at Pendley Manor, and coverage starts from £750. Pendley publishes its rooms and its approach in detail, but not its prices, so the cost section below is short.

What a Pendley Manor wedding costs: ask for the brochure

Pendley Manor does not publish wedding prices on its web pages. Its weddings page links to a packages document and invites couples to tailor an individual package, and the Asian weddings page links a separate Asian weddings brochure and a preferred caterers list. Those documents were not publicly readable when this guide was prepared, so ask the weddings team (weddings@pendley-manor.co.uk) to send the current brochure and price list for your year and day.

Points to cover when you ask: the hire fee for the Rose Garden Grand Suite against the Harcourt Ballroom, whether exclusive use (all 84 bedrooms) is required on Saturdays, minimum guest numbers, whether outside Asian caterers pay a kitchen or corkage fee, and the deposit and payment schedule.

Ceremonies at Pendley Manor, from the staircase to the Grand Suite

The weddings page offers intimate ceremonies on the historic staircase and grand receptions in the Rose Garden Grand Suite, and lists ceremony capacities for its rooms: the Harcourt Ballroom 200, the Oak Room 80, the Verney Room 50 and the Acorn Room 50. In the Oak Room, guests see the couple make their vows against the lawns and woodland outside. The page's sample day puts the ceremony at 2pm; confirm the time with the registrars for your date.

For Asian weddings, the Asian weddings page describes the Rose Garden Grand Suite as a dedicated Asian wedding and event space for 150 to 600 guests, and walks through the engagement, the Haldi, Mehendi and Sangeet, the Baraat and the ceremony. The traditional Asian wedding page offers a grand entrance with "a regal horse or luxury car", vows under a mandap or ceremonial stage, dhol players, and Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Middle Eastern dishes. What it does not publish is where a fire may be lit, so confirm whether the pheras can take place inside the Grand Suite or the Ballroom, and the route a baraat takes up the drive.

The venue also arranges transfers for couples who marry at a nearby church before the reception (western weddings page).

Photography rules at Pendley Manor: the staircase and what is not published

Pendley Manor makes one photography claim prominently: it calls its hand-carved staircase "the only grade-listed staircase in the country licensed to perform as photograph location" (weddings page). Other rules are not published on its pages.

Getting ready in the Bridal Suite

The weddings page describes the morning as breakfast at the hotel followed by getting ready "with your entourage in our beautiful Bridal Suite". With 84 bedrooms, there is room for a second party to prepare separately; with exclusive use every bedroom is yours. The page's sample day puts Bridal Suite preparations at 1pm, after a 10am breakfast; which room is the Bridal Suite is not published, so ask.

Planning photographs on the staircase, the lawns and the rose garden

  • The staircase is the venue's own signature picture, and it is indoors, so it works in any weather.
  • The grounds are described as pristine lawns edged by woodland with a rose garden (weddings page); the peacocks roam the grounds.
  • The Harcourt Ballroom has chandeliers, artistic wall decoration and double doors onto the grounds (Harcourt Ballroom), so a door left open gives daylight early in the evening.
  • The Rose Garden Grand Suite has high ceilings, oak-effect flooring and "plenty of natural light" (Grand Suite page), good for colour in mandap and stage photographs.
  • The Simon Suite is light and wood-panelled with doors onto a secluded patio (Simon Suite); the Verney Room has original hand-crafted panelling; the Willow Room is sunshine yellow.
  • The about page names Grade II listed stained-glass windows and hand-painted hearth tiles: details worth a few frames.

Penda's lea, the Verneys and the 1872 manor

The venue's history page traces Pendley back 2,000 years and to the Domesday Book, and says the name comes from Penda, an Anglo-Saxon king, and the lea or woods. After the Norman Conquest the land passed to Robert, Count of Mortain; in the early 1400s it became a 200-acre hunting ground, then passed to the Verney family for 150 years. The older manor, east of today's house, burned down in 1835, and by 1872 plans were drawn for a neo-Jacobean manor for Joseph Grout Williams, whose family lived there until the late 1940s. Members of the Women's Land Army trained there during the war, and Dorian Williams founded the Pendley Shakespeare Festival in the gardens in 1949. The Harcourt Ballroom followed in 1991, the pool and spa in 2001 and a refurbishment in 2020.

Tring, the M1 and the M25

Station distances and taxi details are not published on its contact page, so ask the hotel for the guest information it sends out. We travel to Tring from our Northwood studio; travel is set out in the written quote.
