Who runs the day, and how we plan for it

Every family hands authority to somebody different. A priest holds it in one house, working to a fixed hour; elsewhere a grandmother holds it and decides when the mehndi truly begins. Our first job on any Asian booking is to identify that person, because they, and not the schedule on your invitation, will tell you what comes next. We ask that at the meeting, never on the morning of.

The physical problems after that are ordinary and solvable. A baraat is loud, mobile and lit only by the sky. An indoor ceremony is dim, low and warm. A reception is a bright stage set into a dark room. Each wants a different setup, and the changeovers between them are where one photographer runs out of hands, which is why multi-day work in Bushey is planned for two of us from the start. Do you photograph the reception and the entertainment afterwards?+

Yes, on until the dance floor thins. Live acts and DJ rigs are their own problem, coloured and moving and unflattering, so we blend a little of our own light in rather than fight what the rig does.

Do you photograph the haldi or pithi ceremony?+

Yes. It is messy, funny and unposed, so it photographs better than almost any staged hour of the week. We work close and accept that a lens may end up yellow. Warn whoever hosts it that we will be underfoot.

Do you take formal family group photographs at Asian weddings?+

Will you photograph our pre-wedding events?+

Yes, and separately if you prefer. Pre-wedding evenings are where a family behaves normally, so the pictures loosen up and often improve. Booked in the same conversation as the wedding, they are far easier to schedule.
