East Ham is an east London area with a large South Asian community and many banqueting halls. Couples come to us from across London and the surrounding area, and Forest Gate, Plaistow and Manor Park are firmly on our patch. The garland exchange, when bride and groom raise the jaimala over one another, releases the first great cheer of the day, and we catch it as it breaks.

We capture the emotion of the day honestly, from the laughter of the sangeet to the tears of the farewell. We shoot the getting-ready hours as a story of anticipation, from the jewellery going on to the last look in the mirror before the ceremony. We arrive knowing the difference between a Gujarati pithi and a Punjabi maiyan, so nobody has to stop and explain their own traditions to us on the day.

We know East Ham, an east London area with a large South Asian community and many banqueting halls, and the surrounding part of Greater London well, having photographed Hindu, Sikh, Muslim, Gujarati and Tamil weddings throughout Forest Gate, Plaistow and Manor Park. We are often in nearby Forest Gate and Tooting too. East Ham and the towns around it offer venues such as East Ham Town Hall, The Grove Banqueting and Crown Banqueting Suite, all familiar to us.

East Ham lies in the London Borough of Newham and is known for its diverse, largely South Asian community along High Street North. East Ham Underground station is served by the District and Hammersmith and City lines. When there is time for couple portraits, Central Park, one of the largest parks in East Ham is a favourite, and East Ham Town Hall, a Grade II listed civic building makes a memorable setting.

Hindu, Sikh, Gujarati, Muslim and Tamil weddings

As the sindoor is applied and the mangalsutra tied, a Hindu marriage is complete, and we are ready for both of those small, fast gestures. We learn the sequence of your particular ceremony beforehand, so whether it is Hindu, Sikh, Muslim, Gujarati or Tamil, we anticipate each ritual rather than chase it. The kanyadaan and the joining of hands at the mandap are photographed with quiet care.

The haldi or pithi is turmeric, colour and mischief in equal measure, and it often gives us the warmest and most unguarded frames of the whole wedding. We photograph the milni, when the two families meet, with all of its warmth. For Muslim families the walima is a generous celebration in its own right, and we cover it as fully as the nikah that precedes it.
