Arabic recitation opens many nikah ceremonies, and we photograph the listening rather than the reciting, because the faces of the parents during those verses carry more than any wide shot of the room.
Bangladeshi gaye holud brings turmeric, colour and a great deal of food, and the feeding of the couple by relative after relative gives an extraordinary run of warm, unforced pictures. Pressed gently into the couple's mouths, the engagement sweets and the mangni ring on the finger are photographed with the elders looking on in real affection. Moving at its own gentle pace, the mehndi evening gives us the yellow and green of the outfits, the flower jewellery and the anticipation building through the songs.

The mehndi night the evening before is a slow, happy gathering, and we work quietly through it so the henna, the songs and the colour all stay in the story. The groom's preparations carry their own quiet energy, the sherwani or suit, the topi or turban, and the brothers fussing over him before the baraat forms.
Often the most emotional moment of the whole day, the rukhsati is photographed with the tenderness it deserves. The evening brings its own energy, with speeches, music and the cutting of the cake, and we stay through it so both halves of the day are complete.
