There are two jobs inside a Sikh wedding and they arrive on a single invoice. Morning happens in premises owned by a congregation: its layout, its timings and the places a lens is permitted were settled long ago and are not up for discussion. Then comes a hired room, where almost all of that reverts to you. Photographers who miss the seam shoot both halves identically, and it reads as a failure of attention rather than skill.
Many guests may arrive by Underground at East Ham station, on the District and Hammersmith & City lines, so the gurdwara can fill faster than any schedule predicts. We would sooner be inside the building well before we are needed, working out where daylight lands and which doors people genuinely use, than arrive punctually and spend the first laavan learning the room as we go.

Palla, laavan and ardas in the darbar hall
A darbar hall arranges itself around a single fixed point, and nothing a photographer carries may be lifted beside the Guru Granth Sahib. Sightlines follow from that alone. We work seated or kneeling throughout, which puts the camera below the sangat's eyeline and means moving at the pace of someone who cannot stand up quickly. Four laavan gives four passages along one route, so the position changes between each of them rather than during any. The palla is worth planning for, because it is among the frames most easily lost: it gets knotted at waist height inside a crowd.
Ardas closes the ceremony with everyone standing, the single moment when a floor position stops working, so we settle where to be beforehand. After that the day changes character. A hired hall returns control over light, timing and where people put themselves, and the doli is where those halves meet: the last of the morning's restraint and the first of the evening's freedom, occurring in a car park.
