Paddington Recreation Ground
Twenty-seven acres behind the Maida Vale mansion blocks, with a café and a wildlife area. Good for older children who need to run before they will stand still.

Family sessions for households in Westminster, Marylebone, Maida Vale, Pimlico and the Square Mile, photographed in your flat, a neighbourhood park or a Royal Park, with Kaushik coming to you from Northwood.
The short answer
Yes. Kaushik Bathia travels about 14 miles from Northwood to photograph families in Westminster, and about 15 miles to the City of London, either at home or in a park such as Paddington Recreation Ground or Finsbury Circus Gardens. A session usually runs about an hour. The Royal Parks and the City's gardens each have their own permit rules for organised photography, which we build into the plan. Session prices come by phone or WhatsApp, and travel from Northwood sits in your written quote.
Me and my family had a photo shoot here and I must say Kaushik did a fantastic job. We went to review the photos and they were really good. We will treasure these memories forever.
We had a fun one hour family portrait session recently.Kaushik was friendly and patient during the whole session,he made every effort to make us smile, giggle which came out in the photos. The photos are lovely and we placed an order for 3 big frames. Thank you !
I booked the family portrait for my family and it was a wonderful experience. Kaushik is such a great photographer, able to coax a smile from any reluctant person. Making the decision of which pictures to chose is particularly difficult as they are all good.
Permits first
Central London is the one part of our area where the choice of park changes the paperwork. The Royal Parks ask for a wedding and lifestyle photography permit for sessions like a family shoot, issued by the park office, and each permit covers up to ten people for one hour. In Hyde Park, anything beyond personal photos on a phone or action camera needs a permit. That hour suits a family session well, since an hour is about as long as most small children will play along.
The City of London Corporation runs its own scheme. Organised photoshoots in its gardens and churchyards need a licence or permit, though a visitor taking holiday snaps needs nothing. If you have a City garden in mind, such as Finsbury Circus Gardens or Festival Gardens beside St Paul's Cathedral, mention it when you enquire so the licence is part of the plan rather than a surprise on the morning.
Westminster's neighbourhood spaces are a third option. Paddington Recreation Ground and St John's Wood Church Grounds are both in the north of the borough, and both have playgrounds, which matters more to a four-year-old than any view of Parliament. If you live in Westminster, our family photographer in Westminster page has more on sessions close to home.

Where to go
Paddington Recreation Ground covers 27 acres behind the mansion blocks of Maida Vale, with an athletics track, tennis courts, a café and a wildlife area. It gives older children room to run, and the wildlife area makes a softer, greener background than the courts. A little to the east, St John's Wood Church Grounds sits north of Regent's Park beside Lord's Cricket Ground, with a refurbished playground, formal gardens, a camellia collection and a small nature reserve.
Further south, the Causton Street play area on the Millbank Estate, behind Tate Britain, has a play space for children aged 3 to 7 and a games area for older ones, divided by a green planted with wisteria. Dogs are not allowed there, which some parents of toddlers will count in its favour. It is a neighbourhood corner rather than a sight, so the pictures look like everyday life in Pimlico and Millbank.
In the Square Mile, Aldgate Square has a central lawn and a water feature of parabolic jets that children can play in, which means splashing and laughter on a warm afternoon. Festival Gardens, created for the Festival of Britain in 1951, puts a lawn and fountain right beside St Paul's Cathedral. Finsbury Circus Gardens, laid out in 1815, holds the City's only Japanese pagoda tree. For City families, see also family photography in the City of London.
At home
Plenty of central London families live without a garden, and that is no obstacle at all. A session at home uses the rooms you already live in: the window seat, the kitchen table, the bed where everyone piles in on a Sunday morning. Light from one good window is all we need, and nobody has to cross town with a toddler, a scooter and a change bag.
Home sessions also suit a family with a new baby as well as older children, or a grandparent who finds travel hard. We can begin indoors and, if the weather and the children allow, walk to the nearest park for twenty minutes outside. The travel element from Northwood to your door is quoted up front and written into your quote before you book, whether you live in St John's Wood or a few streets from Liverpool Street.

Ages and seasons
Central London parks fill up at weekends and in the middle of the day, especially around St James's Park, where pelicans have lived by the lake since 1664 and are a magnet for small children. An early morning session gives quieter paths and softer light, and it suits babies and toddlers who are brightest after breakfast. Summer evenings suit school-age children once homework is out of the way.
Late spring to autumn gives the fullest trees and the most colour. The Green Park, with no formal flower beds, only mature trees, grassland and wildflower meadows, looks its best when the meadows are long. In winter, a session at home or a covered spot such as Leadenhall Market, with its 1881 wrought-iron and glass building, keeps everyone dry; older children may recognise it as the approach to the Leaky Cauldron in the first Harry Potter film.
Toddlers do best with a play area nearby and a short walk. Children from about five upwards enjoy a destination: watching the pelicans, spotting the Elizabeth Tower, or hunting for the black circle in Guildhall Yard that marks London's Roman amphitheatre. Teenagers tend to relax when the session feels like a walk through the city rather than a formal sitting.
What to wear
Central London backgrounds are busier than a field: stone buildings, traffic, passers-by. Plain, mid-tone clothes in two or three colours that sit well together keep the family as the subject. Avoid big logos and bold stripes. Bring a warm layer for the children even in late spring, because riverside spots such as Victoria Tower Gardens, between the Thames and the Houses of Parliament, can feel cooler than the street.
After the session you see a private online gallery and choose your favourites at your own pace, with prints, framed wall art or a hand-finished album to order. For how family sessions work more generally, see our family photography page, and for the rest of what we do in this area, the Central London photographer page.

Planning
Twenty-seven acres behind the Maida Vale mansion blocks, with a café and a wildlife area. Good for older children who need to run before they will stand still.
A wedding and lifestyle permit from the park office covers up to ten people for one hour. Grandparents, aunts and cousins all count, so share the group size early.
The City of London Corporation licenses organised shoots in its gardens and churchyards. Name the garden when you enquire and it becomes part of the plan.
Children can play in the water jets, so pack a towel and a spare outfit. The lawn and the curve of hornbeams give a calmer backdrop for the family group.
The parks, gardens and open spaces below are the ones described on this page, each with the rules or features worth knowing before a family session.

Town by town
Central London on this page means Westminster and the City of London, both about 14 to 15 miles from Northwood. Each has its own page with more on family sessions there.
Good to know
Yes, with a Royal Parks wedding and lifestyle photography permit from the park office. Each permit covers up to ten people for one hour, so a larger extended family may need another plan, such as a session at home or in a neighbourhood park. The pelicans by the lake and the view along The Mall to Buckingham Palace make it an instantly recognisable Westminster backdrop.
Paddington Recreation Ground in Maida Vale and St John's Wood Church Grounds, beside Lord's Cricket Ground, both have playgrounds and gardens. Further south, Victoria Tower Gardens sits between the Thames and the Houses of Parliament and holds Rodin's The Burghers of Calais. Each gives a different feel, from playground to riverside.
The City of London is about 15 miles from the Northwood studio and Westminster about 14, so central London sits comfortably inside the area Kaushik covers for family sessions. He comes to your home or chosen park. Travel from Northwood appears in your written quote, so the whole arrangement is clear before you book.
Yes. A flat works well: we use the light from your biggest window and the places your family actually spends time, such as the sofa, the kitchen table or the children's room. If everyone is still in the mood afterwards, a short walk to the nearest park adds some outdoor frames to the set.
It can be. The City had 8,583 residents at the 2021 census but around 330,000 people work there daily, so a weekend can feel calmer than a weekday for a family shoot. Spots like Festival Gardens and Finsbury Circus Gardens are worth considering. Organised shoots in City gardens and churchyards need a licence or permit from the City of London Corporation, so name the place when you enquire.
Ring or WhatsApp 07956 505383 for the price of a Westminster or City family session. It depends on the session length and what you would like to take home, from a digital gallery to prints and albums. Any Royal Park or City garden permit is a matter for the park authority and sits outside the session itself.
Yes. If your family is gathering in central London for a birthday, an anniversary or a festival such as Diwali or Eid, a session can be planned around it. For a group larger than ten, a Royal Park permit will not cover everyone, so a home, a hired room or a park outside the Royal Parks is the better choice. Groupings are planned in advance so nobody is missed.
