Talk fills the nikah almost entirely, and the whole thing finishes quickly. Which is a problem: seated adults listening are not, in themselves, a photograph. The margins are where we work. A father's expression as the khutbah is given, a hand pressed on the paper, a mother three rows back who thinks nobody is looking. During recitation from the Quran we take nothing whatsoever, and we stay upright instead of crouching, since a crouching photographer draws far more attention than a standing one.

Ceiling material decides more at a nikah than it does at most weddings. Bounce works in a low, pale hall and the whole room stays clean; dark timber high above absorbs whatever you fire into it, and stands come out of the van. Find out which yours is. Once the dua closes, everything accelerates, the rukhsati often sooner than the family expects, which is why somebody of ours is already outside. Plan the walima separately; it is its own day.

Two cameras in hand rather than one in a bag, with spare glass, batteries and cards alongside. Every shutter release records to a second card as well, and by bedtime the take sits on two independent drives.
