Nothing we photograph all year is as colour saturated as a mehndi evening, and hardly any of it takes place in light you would choose. Rooms are dressed in reds and golds, the henna work is close and detailed, and the useful frames point downward at hands rather than outward across a hall. We shoot wide open and warm, with one small light held to one side so patterns on a palm still read as line work instead of a smudge.
Minutes are all the nikah itself may take, which catches out couples who have built a whole afternoon around it. What rewards a camera is the paperwork: pens, a table, the pause before a signature, the faces of the people watching it happen. Those frames are small and close, so the position is agreed beforehand, never improvised. A walima runs at the opposite scale, and we light that one ourselves rather than trusting a room to do it.
