Commercial premises in Kensington and Chelsea are frequently converted townhouses, and a townhouse stacks its floors rather than spreading them. That has one consequence which decides the shape of the whole day: the team is spread over several floors, the lighting can only be on one, and something has to move. Moving people is cheap and moving a lit setup is expensive, so the setup goes up once, into whichever room has the height and a clear wall, and everyone comes to it in twos and threes while their own work carries on around them. A run of twenty then costs an afternoon instead of two days, and all twenty are made under identical conditions, which is what makes the finished row look deliberate rather than assembled. Access is the other thing to plan for instead of discovering. Near Cromwell Road, or anywhere among the museums of South Kensington, we work on the assumption that kit is carried in rather than parked beside, so we bring what two people can carry in one trip and we arrive early enough that the carrying does not eat the booked time. Stairs are worth mentioning when you book, along with how tight the turn is at the top, because both change what comes out of the van. Interiors are photographed in whatever order keeps the rooms usable: the space that has to be emptied is done first and put back before anyone needs it again.
