Documenting Muslim weddings in Hendon

Hendon is a diverse north London area with grand banqueting suites. We are used to multi-venue days throughout Greater London, moving smoothly between Colindale, Golders Green and Brent Cross. Some of the most moving frames of a nikah are the smallest, a father's hand on a shoulder or a whispered word before the ijab-e-qubool, and we look for every one of them.

A female photographer is available for the ladies' side, so the women's mehndi and celebrations are fully covered. We are mindful of modesty throughout, and photograph the gender-segregated celebrations with sensitivity. We move with the day's own rhythm, busy and close during the mehndi and the baraat, still and unobtrusive through the nikah, so our presence always matches the moment.

Hendon is a diverse area of the London Borough of Barnet and home to a large Middlesex University campus. Hendon Central station is on the Edgware branch of the Northern line. For pre-wedding and couple portraits, we love spots such as Hendon Park, a public park close to Hendon Central station, with RAF Museum London, dedicated to the history of the Royal Air Force close by for a striking backdrop.

The nikah, from ijab-e-qubool to dua

The closing dua draws the whole gathering into a shared moment of prayer, and we photograph the bowed heads and the open hands with real reverence. The moment the imam pronounces the couple married, the room changes, and we are watching the faces of both families as the solemnity gives way to open joy. A female photographer can cover the ladies' side of the nikah, so the women's moments are not lost.

We capture the groom's arrival in procession, surrounded by celebrating family. The mehndi is a riot of colour and noise, henna drawn on the bride's hands while the music builds, and it often gives us the most joyful frames of the whole wedding. The mehndi night is full of colour, music and dancing, and often holds the warmest moments of all.
