The binding minutes look like almost nothing. People sit, an imam talks, and the reply arrives so quietly that half the hall misses it. Silence and stillness are different things, and a lens registers only the latter. We shoot longer and tighter here than at any other point, from a spot agreed before the room filled.

Then a table, two witnesses, a pen, and the nikah-nama takes a signature with every head bowed. Bowed heads are the problem. A frame at table height shows scalps; one from slightly above and to one side shows a hand, a signature and a father watching. Ask for half a minute afterwards, before the room stands. Walima is a different discipline again, nearer reportage, and it wants the same restraint in a far brighter room.
