Anand karaj in Wealdstone: how the photography would work

Photographing an anand karaj is largely about standing where you are allowed to stand, and permission for that is sought long beforehand. Congregational lighting is fixed; no part of it bends to a camera. The floor belongs to the sangat. What remains are the hall's edges, taken at the same seated level as everybody else, and we pick those positions while the hall still stands empty.

The morning does not open in there. Milni happens outdoors, whatever sky the car park has on the day, two families greeting one another in pairs with plenty of movement and very little room to do it in. It is the only daylight passage of a Sikh morning, and ten minutes beforehand spent reading which direction the two lines will form repays itself several times over. Nothing in that greeting pauses while a camera catches up.

From laavan to langar and doli

The four laavan are read first and walked afterwards, and it is the walking that moves. Edge-on, the couple show in profile for one circuit and from behind on the next, so no photographer should promise a complete set of faces. Flash has no business in there, which means exposure gets matched to the fittings overhead and then left alone for an hour. Nothing in that room can be shifted to suit an angle, and it would be wrong to ask.

Langar seats everyone in rows at floor level, a low, level frame that no table dinner produces. Doli goes the other way: brief, tearful, half of it glimpsed through a car window. Between the two there is usually an unallocated hour, and that is where portraits belong. Evening moves to a second building, dark and high overhead, where the light in your photographs is entirely light we carried in and placed.

Can you handle a Sikh wedding with six hundred guests?+

Yes. Numbers change the marshalling, not the photography. At that size the group list needs writing down first, somebody in the family whose shout carries needs to be doing the calling, and a corner has to be reserved while dinner is still being plated.
