The former Kodak factory site on Headstone Drive is the landmark Wealdstone gives directions by, and the works it belonged to once employed thousands of people locally. What matters for photography is the shape that left behind. A district which answered to one enormous employer now answers to many small ones, and a small operation needs a different set of pictures from a corporate campus: a handful of portraits that match each other, a few frames showing the premises in use, and images cut to the proportions a website wants. Nearly all of this happens on your own floor, which puts the room ahead of the diary in deciding how it turns out. Two lighting problems recur. One is mixed colour, because daylight through a window and whatever tubes sit in the ceiling are never the same temperature, and a face sitting between the two ends up cool on one cheek and green on the other. Killing the ceiling fittings and supplying our own light settles colour and direction in one move. The other is ceiling height, which governs how large a light can be and therefore how soft the result is. A low ceiling is not a barrier, it just changes the answer. Consistency is the part that pays later. Every distance, height and power setting is logged, so anyone who joins next year can be lit to match, and nobody reading the page will spot where one picture ends and another begins.
