Rooms in this part of London are lit to be looked at rather than to be photographed in. A restaurant, a bar or a shop floor gets fitted out with warm, low, deliberately directional light, often from fittings meant to appear in shot, and the instinct to fix that by adding one large soft source is what wrecks the picture: the room stops resembling itself and starts resembling a showroom. The better approach is to match the colour of what already burns there and lift only the shadows that have gone solid black, leaving the pools of light and the falloff between them alone. Colour temperature is the specific trap. Daylight through a shopfront window is blue set against fittings that are deeply orange, and any frame holding both contains two skin tones, one at either side of the room. Nothing corrects that afterwards, so we work at whichever end of the day one source clearly wins: early, with the doors still shut and the fittings switched off, or once it is properly dark and the window has gone black. Mid afternoon is the hour to refuse. Staff are the other half of the job. Shift patterns mean a full team is never in the building simultaneously, so the lighting goes up once, gets measured, and gets written down, and people are photographed as they come free across the day. Somebody who joins three months later sits in the same row without an obvious join.
