The trade in Camden is not office trade, and that changes what a commercial shoot has to solve. Market business and a long-standing live music economy mean the premises are stalls, units, bars and venues rather than open-plan floors, and those spaces bring two lighting problems that offices do not. The first is volume. The Roundhouse began in 1847 as a railway engine shed, and buildings of that lineage have height, so the ceiling is too far away and generally too dark to bounce anything off it. Light has to be carried in and shaped on the spot rather than borrowed from the room. The second is mixed sources. Venue and bar interiors run coloured and tungsten fittings alongside whatever daylight gets in, and colours that read as atmosphere to the eye turn into three different skin tints in one frame unless those fittings are overpowered or switched off at the board. Where a team is split between a venue and a unit, the only way the portraits match across both is to bring the same light to each of them, or to run everyone through the Northwood studio and let the location work be about the premises rather than the people.
