We work one room at another hour, from another height, on another focal length, and we settle which day receives which treatment before anybody arrives, rather than improvising it on the second morning.

Two families rarely put ceremonial weight identically, and establishing where yours puts it comes before anything else. How a wedding will actually be shaped is not safe to assume from an invitation. One household turns entirely on a nikah conducted in a side room by an imam nobody outside the family has met. Another builds a whole weekend toward an evening reception. We photograph the version you are actually having, not a composite of everything the word Asian gets made to cover.

Then come the words between families, which nobody thinks to put on a running order. Greetings at a door, an uncle deciding on a speech, two mothers finding one another in a car park: quick, unlit, unrepeatable, and holding more of what two families are to each other than any arranged group can. Nobody gets a second attempt at them, so we drift toward doorways and away from the centre of a room.
