Whichever room you marry in matters more than couples are usually told. Establish which of a building's spaces hold a licence, then establish where daylight gets into each, since the two together govern the light you stand in and gear only patches a poor pairing. Newport puts an estate setting against a resort one, and the two behave differently. That single question, put before you sign anything, rescues more photographs than any glass we could carry in.

Registrars do not all work alike, and that variation is not a detail. One is content to have a camera close during vows; another sets a boundary and holds it. Neither is unreasonable, neither is renegotiable on the morning, so the place for that question is your notice appointment and not a corridor. Whatever you are told, we work to it. Asking early is free, and the reply settles our standing position for the few minutes of the day that legally must happen.

Formal groups are how an afternoon disappears without anyone noticing. Eight combinations get done properly; twenty do not, unless a whole hour of the reception is expendable. Write them down, hold the number low, and pass the list to somebody in each family who can recognise everybody and fetch them by name. A short list also spares the people in it. Nobody enjoys being held on a lawn while a photographer counts heads. We call, they gather, and nobody's glass has gone warm by the end of it.
